Contact Log

Keep a searchable record in your dashboard of every message successfully sent through your SiteOrigin Contact Forms. Entries are stored in WordPress, so a message is still available if an email is deleted, filtered to spam, or never reaches your inbox.

Requirements

To use this addon, go to SiteOriginPremium Addons and activate the Contact Log Addon. The SiteOrigin Contact Form Widget will be automatically activated at PluginsSiteOrigin Widgets.

Viewing the Log

Once the addon is active, a Contact Log entry is recorded every time a visitor successfully sends a message through any SiteOrigin Contact Form on your site. Go to SiteOriginContact Log to view them.

Only successful submissions are recorded. If the email itself fails to send, the visitor sees the form’s error message and no entry is created.

Entries can’t be created by hand, only viewed, searched, exported, and deleted. The log is a record of what your visitors actually submitted.

The Contact Log lists every message received, with a search box and an Export button above it.

The list displays the following columns:

Subject
The subject of the submission. Click it to view the full entry.

Name
The name the visitor submitted, if that form has a name field.

Email
The email address the visitor submitted.

Date
When the message was received.

Viewing an Entry

An entry shows the full submission, where it was sent from, and when it was received.

Click any entry to view it. Three panels are available:

Submission
Every field the visitor completed, in the order it appears on the form, using your own field labels. Line breaks in message fields are preserved.

Details
Where the message came from. This includes a link to the page holding the form, and the sender’s IP address if you’ve enabled Log IP Addresses in the Contact Form Widget’s Settings. If the form was submitted from a widget area, or from a page that has since been deleted, the origin page is omitted.

Submitted
The date and time the message was received, along with the option to move the entry to the trash.

Searching

Use the search box at the top right of the Contact Log to find an entry. In addition to the subject, the search covers the content of the submission itself, so you can search for a sender’s name, their email address, or a phrase from their message.

Searching for more than one word returns only the entries that contain all of them.

Exporting

Click the Export button above the Contact Log to download the entire log as a CSV file, ready to open in a spreadsheet application.

The export includes a column for every field used across your forms, along with the date received, the origin page, and the IP address where recorded. Entries that don’t include a particular field are left blank in that column.

Settings

Go to SiteOriginPremium Addons, locate the Contact Log Addon, and click Settings. There you’ll find the following options:

Roles With Access
By default, only Administrators can view the Contact Log. Select any additional roles that should have access. Users in a selected role will see the SiteOrigin menu with Contact Log available inside it, and can view, search, export, and delete entries.

Deselecting a role removes its access again. Administrators always have access and can’t be deselected.

Delete Entries After
The number of days to keep contact log entries. Leave this field empty to keep them indefinitely, which is the default.

When a number of days is set, entries older than that are permanently deleted once a day. Deletion is permanent rather than a move to trash, so set this only if you’re comfortable with older messages being removed automatically. Clearing the field stops any further deletion, but entries already removed can’t be recovered.

Privacy Requests

Contact Log entries are included in WordPress’s built-in personal data tools at ToolsExport Personal Data and ToolsErase Personal Data.

Enter the visitor’s email address and WordPress will include their submissions in the exported archive, or permanently delete them when handling an erasure request.

WordPress matches these requests by email address, so a submission can only be found this way if the visitor entered their address in your form’s email field. Personal information typed into a message or other free-text field, on a form with no email field, can’t be matched to a request. The Delete Entries After setting is the way to clear those entries.
