Post Formats

A post format changes the layout of a post. Vantage supports seven formats: Standard, Aside, Gallery, Link, Image, Quote and Video. Gallery, Image and Video have their own layouts. Aside, Link and Quote look the same as Standard.

Choose a Format

Edit a post. In the block editor, open the Post tab of the sidebar, click Format and choose a format. In the classic editor, use the Format box. Then update the post.

The format applies to the post page and to the post in your blog and archive lists.

Standard

The Standard format shows the featured image above the post title, if you added one and the Featured Image setting is on in Blog. The post details and the content follow the title.

Vantage has no special layout for these formats. They use the Standard layout.

The Gallery format shows the first gallery of the post as a slideshow above the post title.

The way you add the gallery decides the result:

  • Gallery shortcode. The slideshow shows the images, and the gallery does not show again in the content. By default the shortcode uses the small thumbnail size, so the images look blurred. Add size="large" to use a bigger image, for example . In the block editor, add the shortcode with a Shortcode block, or with a Classic block.
  • Gallery block. The slideshow uses the full size images. At the moment, the gallery also shows again in the content below the slideshow. To avoid this, use the shortcode.

Image

The Image format shows the first image in the content above the post title. Vantage removes that image from the content, so it does not show twice. If the content has no image, Vantage shows the featured image.

Video

The Video format shows the first video above the post title. Vantage looks for a video link that is on a line of its own, for example a YouTube or Vimeo link. Vantage removes that link from the content.

Use the Embed block for the video. You can also paste the link on its own line in the Classic block. Vantage does not find a video in a Paragraph block, a Video block, an iframe or a shortcode.

At the moment, a Video post shows none of its text when Vantage does not find a video link. The title and the post details still show. If the text of your post is missing, use the Embed block. We track this on GitHub.
