Child Theme

To change the theme files at code level, use a child theme. Changes that you make to the Vantage files in AppearanceTheme File Editor are lost when you update the theme. A child theme keeps your changes safe.

Starter Child Theme

The starter theme is a basic child theme. It has no changes yet. It loads the Vantage stylesheet, and then your own style.css file. It also has an empty functions.php file for your code.

Install the Child Theme

1. Go to AppearanceThemes and click Add Theme.
2. Click Upload Theme, choose the zip file and click Install Now.
3. Click Activate. Keep the Vantage parent theme installed.

Add your CSS to the style.css file of the child theme. Add PHP code to its functions.php file. For ideas, see CSS Snippets and Advanced Customizations.
