Origami is a SiteOrigin theme for blogs and photo sites, with one centered column of content, a menu bar below the logo, a footer widget area and a slider for image galleries.

Origami Pages

  • Getting Started: install Origami and set up your site.

Set Up Origami

Origami adds two panels to AppearanceCustomize: Theme Settings and Theme Design. The AppearanceTheme Settings page only tells you that the settings have moved to the Customizer. To install Origami, see Getting Started.

Go to AppearanceCustomizeSite Identity and click Select logo. WordPress offers to crop the image; click Skip Cropping to keep it as it is. Origami shows the logo at its own size, scaled down to fit narrow screens. If your site set its logo in Header Image before, Origami still shows that image when Logo is empty. With neither image, the header shows your site title and tagline, and Title Font in Theme Design sets the site title font. To center the logo, turn on Center Logo in Theme Settings.

Until you assign a menu, the menu bar lists all your pages. To choose the links, go to AppearanceMenus, create a menu and select Primary Menu under Menu Settings, then click Save Menu. Sub-menu items show as drop-downs; see Menus. On small screens a Menu button replaces the menu bar; see Responsive Navigation in Theme Settings.

Origami has one widget area, Footer, and no sidebar. Add widgets at AppearanceWidgets; see Widget Areas. The widgets share the footer width equally in one row and stack on screens up to 640 pixels wide. The footer widget area shows only when it has widgets. The copyright line below it comes from Copyright in Theme Settings.

Page Templates and Columns

Origami has two page templates. Choose one in the Template list of the page editor:

  • Without Page Title hides the page title and the featured image. It shows in the list twice; both entries do the same job (issue #33).
  • Archives shows the page content, then your four most recent posts, links to yearly and monthly archives, and your categories.

Posts and pages also have a Columns box in the editor sidebar. Choose 2 Columns or 3 Columns to split the text into columns. This needs Use Columns in Theme Settings, it does not apply to pages built with Page Builder, and screens up to 480 pixels wide show one column.

Origami shows your latest posts on any page with the slug blog, in place of the page content. To show your posts on another page, choose that page for Posts page at SettingsReading.

Page Builder

Origami recommends Page Builder by SiteOrigin with a notice in the WordPress admin, which links to AppearanceInstall Plugins. With Page Builder active, you can build your home page at AppearanceHome Page, starting from Origami’s Business Home Page layout. See Integrated Plugins and the Page Builder documentation.

If You Used Origami Premium

Origami Premium was a separate version of the theme with extra features built in. The free Origami theme on WordPress.org, version 1.10.3, replaces it. SiteOrigin Premium provides two of the old features for Origami; for the others, use the replacements below.

  • Footer link removal and Ajax comments still work. With SiteOrigin Premium active, Footer Attribution and Ajax Comments in Theme Settings become checkboxes, and both are on by default.
  • Post sharing (the Share Post and Twitter Username settings) is gone. Use a sharing plugin, such as the sharing buttons in Jetpack.
  • Slide links (the Target URL field on gallery images) are gone. Your saved links are still in the database; Galleries has a snippet that brings them back.
  • The SiteOrigin Google Map and SiteOrigin Embedded Video Widgets are gone. Replace them with the Google Maps Widget and the Video Player Widget from the Widgets Bundle.
  • The Custom CSS editor is gone. Install SiteOrigin CSS: it adds AppearanceCustom CSS and reads the CSS you saved in Origami Premium.

WordPress saves Customizer settings, and SiteOrigin CSS saves custom CSS, for each theme folder. If Origami Premium ran from a different folder than Origami, set your Theme Settings and Theme Design again, and copy your CSS into SiteOrigin CSS.
