Yoast Compatability Issue

My yoast scores were all fine, green bullets etc. At some point many of them changed without me editing any content on the pages. Whilst checking some of the pages I noticed my readability scores had gone to 0.

I’ve been testing the page and found that so long as I have one row with one siteorigin editor widget with the page text then the score shows normally (around 45). As I add more rows/widgets to the page (even empty image/slider/search/custom HTML/button widgets) the score decreases. By the time I have my images that I want on the page added the score is 0. I think a pagebuilder update may have changed my yoast scores sitewide.

At the moment this means I can’t rely on my yoast analysis on any page that has more than one pagebuilder widget. Can anyone please give me some indication on what is happening. I have contacted yoast and they suspect it’s a plugin conflict, however I have done troubleshooting and the issue remains between yoast and pagebuilder. Thank you.

    Hi, thanks for reaching out.

The upcoming release of Page Builder has a few SEO plugin compatibility improvements and fixes. If you’d like to try this version now, please, find a copy here. To make use of this copy, download the ZIP file to your desktop. Next, go to Plugins, deactivate and delete Page Builder. Finally, install the ZIP file from PluginsAdd NewUpload PluginActivate.

Without taking a deep look at the pages you’re working on and your site in general, it’s hard to know what’s happening. That said, it’s worth giving the Page Builder update in beta format a try before we move on with the investigation.

Hello, I just added the beta plugin and now I'm seeing a similar problem except when I add empty widgets the yoast readability scores now go UP instead of down. The passive voice and transition words score also changes by quite a large amount considering absolutely no text is added.
This happens with empty image widgets as well as ones with images so if
I have more than a few images on a page my score is significantly affected.

For example, with a single siteorigin editor widget with text, Yoast says:

    Problems (2)
Flesch Reading Ease: The copy scores 39.6 in the test, which is considered difficult to read. Try to make shorter sentences, using less difficult words to improve readability.

Passive voice: 18.2% of the sentences contain passive voice, which is more than the recommended maximum of 10%. Try to use their active counterparts.

    Improvements (1)
Transition words: Only 27.3% of the sentences contain transition words,
which is not enough. Use more of them.

    —–

When I added a single widget, in this example I used the wordpress links:

    Problems (2)
Flesch Reading Ease: The copy scores 43.2 in the test, which is considered difficult to read. Try to make shorter sentences, using less difficult words to improve readability.

Transition words: Only 15.8% of the sentences contain transition words,
which is not enough. Use more of them.

    Improvements (1)
Passive voice: 10.5% of the sentences contain passive voice, which is more than the recommended maximum of 10%. Try to use their active counterparts.

    —–

After removing that and trying SiteOrigin Image it reads:

    Problems(2)

Flesch Reading Ease: The copy scores 41.7 in the test, which is considered difficult to read. Try to make shorter sentences, using less difficult words to improve readability.

Passive voice: 15.4% of the sentences contain passive voice, which is more than the recommended maximum of 10%. Try to use their active counterparts.

I spent a bit of time testing each widget available to me to see which effect the yoast score, this may be of use to you if there is a bug with the beta plugin as well as the previous version.

Yoast scores are changed when adding the following widgets, all are empty widgets just placed with no content edited or text added:

    Archives
    Categories
    Links
    Meta
    Pages
    Recent Comments
    Search
    SiteOrigin Button
    SiteOrigin Image
    SiteOrigin Layout Slider
    SiteOrigin Slider
    Virtue Icon Flip Box

I've found that the score is not effected by:

    Audio
    Calendar
    Custom HTML
    Gallery
    Image
    Layout Builder
    Navigation Menu
    Post Content
    Post loop
    RSS
    Recent Posts
    SiteOrigin Editor
    SiteOrigin Features
    SiteOrigin Google Maps
    SiteOrigin Post Carousel
    Tag Cloud
    Text
    Virtue Call to Action
    Virtue Carousel
    Virtue Contact Card
    Virtue Gallery
    Virtue Google Map
    Virtue Image
    Virtue Image Menu Item
    Virtue Info Box
    Virtue Post Grid
    Virtue Recent Posts
    Virtue Social Links
    Virtue Split Content
    Virtue Tabs & Accordions
    Virtue Testimonial Carousel

Thank you for your help, I'll continue trying to find out if there's a way to work around this but I do use yoast and pagebuilder on all the sites I currently manage and I use the siteorigin image wand button widgets quite often. Please let me know if you find out what is causing this.

  3. 22 days, 9 hours ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for your detailed feedback, I’ll get Alex here at SiteOrigin to take a look and get back to you.

A quick note on some of the empty widgets mentioned, the following widgets don’t require any further action other than inserting them to output content:

    Archives
    Categories
    Links
    Meta
    Pages
    Recent Comments
    Search

Put another way, just by inserting the above widgets, content is outputted.

Thanks for your swift response, I did think this was the case however I wanted to be thorough when testing and reporting. Have a nice day.

  5. 22 days, 9 hours ago Alex Stapleton Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Nmclaren87,

I’m having trouble replicating this. For testing purposes, I added ten blank SiteOrigin Image widgets, Image widgets, and SiteOrigin Button widgets, and didn’t see any changes to Flesch Reading Ease, Transition words, or Passive voice. I then tried a completely new page where I added those widgets – no actual content was added – and Yoast is reporting not enough content and Flesch Reading Ease and Transition words as 0/none.

Are you using Yoast Premium or the free version? Are you using the WordPress Classic Editor or Block Editor?
Does this issue occur if you disable all non-SiteOirgin plugins (except for Yoast) and change to a default theme?

    Kind regards,
    Alex

I just disabled all plugins except PageBuilder, SiteOrigin widgets, and
Yoast, and also switched to TwentyTwenty theme. I'm using yoast free at the moment but had this issue with premium on another site. I'm still seeing the errors in the Yoast scores. This happens on existing pages and new pages where I only add a editor with text and then an empty siteorigin image widget. I am using classic editor.

    Hi Nmclaren87,

Thanks for trying. I’ve since been able to replicate this issue. I think I’ve identified a possible solution to this issue, and I’m no longer able to replicate it upon applying the fix. Can you please try this version of SiteOrigin Page Builder? For installation instructions please refer to this post.

    Kind regards,
    Alex

Hi I've installed the version you sent as I would normally install a plugin, but I'm unable to open the post you linked me to. Just wanted to check in case there's something I missed because unfortunately still getting the problem. I logged in and it says I don't have permission.
Could you link me it again please. Thank you

    Hi Nmclaren87,

That’s odd. For reference, it’s the first reply by Andrew to your thread.
Can you please try clearing your browser cache to see if that helps? Please test the updated version by creating a new page to rule out any potential “carry over” data.

    Kind regards,
    Alex.

Hi I've tried clearing cache and unfortunately still have the issue. I also tried a different browser and again same issue. It's really puzzling me, I do appreciate your help in trying to figure this out. I'm going to see if I can replicate the error on my personal wordpress at home and I'll let you know if I find out anything. Thank you.

    Hi Nmclaren87,

Just reaching out to see how you went. Were you able to replicate this issue on your other website? If you were, please try this beta release to see if that helps. To make use of this copy, download the ZIP file to your desktop. Next, go to Plugins, deactivate and delete Page Builder. Finally, install the ZIP file from PluginsAdd NewUpload PluginActivate.

    Kind regards,
    Alex.

Unfortunately still seem to be having the same issue with scores changing as more widgets are added.

    Hi Nmclaren87,

I’m having trouble replicating this issue after installing the beta version of SiteOrigin Page Builder. Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look at this issue on your website?

    Kind regards,
    Alex

Hi I cant give permission to log in without checking with work and I'm off sick at the moment. I have made a fresh wordpress install at home with new database and only installed yoast free, the last pagebuilder version you sent me, and siteorigin widgets bundle. Its using the default Twenty Twenty theme.

I'm still having the issue but have found that on occasions I create a new page and add an editor block with text content my yoast readability may be say 50, then I add a button or image and it changes. Then if I click 'revert to editor' and then straight back into pagebuilder tab the score goes back to 50. I was happy because I thought I found a workaround at last. However this only works once with the first widget,
if I add more than one then switch between them again it keeps the incorrect scores.

    Hi Nmclaren87,

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to replicate this since the changes made in the provided build were made. I just created a new test site locally and attempted to replicate your setup and wasn’t able to replicate this either.

Can you please provide me with the exact steps you’re taking to test this issue?

    Kind regards,
    Alex

  17. 18 days, 1 hour ago nmclaren87

Ok. I'm using Chrome, wordpress 5.5.1, siteorigin panels 2.11.3-beta-2,
siteorigin widgets bundle 1.17.7 and yoast SEO free 14.9

    I create new page
Add siteorigin editor widget from options in classic editor view
    Add text
    Check yoast scores
    Click add widget
    Select button/image widget
    Yoast scores then are different

  18. 17 days, 3 hours ago Alex Stapleton Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Nmclaren87,

Thanks. I’ve replicated your steps on a fresh WordPress install, and Yoast isn’t reporting any chances for me after adding a SiteOrigin Button, or SiteOrigin Image widget.

To confirm, what are the specific changes you’re seeing (if possible, please provide me with a screenshot of before and after)? Can you please provide me with the exact text you’re seeing? Are you able to replicate these results when using a different computer?

    Kind regards,
    Alex

  19. 16 days, 7 hours ago nmclaren87

Ok here are screenshots. The text used was just copied from an article I had open, the text is identical in every example editor block. As you can see by simply adding a button widget with no customisation the yoast scores change. More buttons means more changes. I have had this issue on work pc, home pc, two laptops, in chrome incognito, in chrome normal, on safari, firefox, and edge. Also same issue on about 4 separate websites.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. Due to spam issues over the years the forum, unfortunately, doesn’t support email attachments. You can upload images to imgur.com or any cloud sharing site, perhaps Drive or Dropbox if you’d like more control and then share the link. Thanks again.

I replied by email but haven’t had a response so thought it may not have come through, here’s the screenshots

Thanks for the screenshots. It would be helpful if we could work off the same layouts. If you could please, export the JSON layouts from the pages you’d like us to test, that would be great. You can do that from LayoutsImport/ExportDownload Layout. WeTransfer.com is one option for sending us files. Thanks again.

  23. 14 days, 3 hours ago nmclaren87

I just tried to download layouts from several pages but the download file is 0 bytes which doesn’t sound like it’s going to be helpful.

  24. 14 days, 3 hours ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

If you open the JSON file, is it empty? Does this happen from both the Classic and Block Editors?

  25. 14 days, 1 hour ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

A possibility is that a plugin conflict is negatively impacting the layouts export feature. A quick check to run would be to try exporting a layout with all non-SiteOrgin plugins temporarily deactivated to see if that changes the situation.
