Page Builder just doesn’t work

I have no idea how this is happening, since I use Page Builder elsewhere with no problems, but on my new site it simply isn’t doing anything at all. I’ve disabled EVERY other plugin, in fact I’ve removed all other plugins. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Page Builder, but the issue persists.
I create a brand new page, which opens in Visual mode. Write a line of dummy content, hit ‘Preview Changes’ and there is my dummy content. Excellent. Now back to the editor, and click the Page Builder tab. “Do I want to import?” Yes, accept that. Hit Preview again, just to be sure, and yes it’s still there. Right, let’s hit Layouts, and then pick one, then click Insert, and choose ‘Insert After’. As expected, our page fills with content rows. Let’s do no more than hit Preview Changes, to look at our newly inserted content. Nope, sorry, your original dummy content is there, but nowt else. Okay, maybe it didn’t ‘preview’ well, so let’s hit Update, and then view the page. Hang on, when I hit Update, my editing window returns to ‘Text’ mode, and there are a couple of in there. Hit view page anyway, and there’s just my original line of dummy content, looking all lonesome.
Let’s return to Page Builder, and see if we can see what’s happening. So, accept the “Would you like to copy this editor’s existing content to Page Builder?” message again and here we are, with just a single row with my dummy content in it. Okay, maybe ‘prebuilt’ layouts are having a problem, let’s do our own. Add Row, make it a single column, hit insert. Then Add Widget, pick Hero, then click Edit, Add Frame, click the drop down arrow to edit the frame we just made, add some dummy text, click Choose Media and add a picture, leave all the rest on defaults, and scroll down to the bottom and hit Preview. And get a blank screen. Nada. Close that, hit Update in the page again, and View Page, and there’s that lonely old original dummy line of text.
I KNOW this builder works, I just can’t work out why it won’t work HERE! I’ve cleared all my caches, obviously :(

    Hi Mike,

This sounds like it could be either a plugin conflict, or the server rejecting a specific widget (for whatever reason). The easiest thing to test for is a plugin conflict, so let’s rule that out.

Can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? You’ll need to clear all your caches after disabling your plugins.

If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.

Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.

If you aren’t using a SiteOrigin theme, then you can also try temporarily switching to one of the default WordPress themes to see if the issue is theme related.

I’ve just created a brand new subdomain, literally fresh out of the box, exactly standard install of WP. Done nothing other than install Pagebuilder, add a new page, and click the Page Builder tab, select Layouts, ‘Charity’ (not that the chosen layout matters, it does it with any of them), Insert After. In the editor window, all the rows are shown. Hit Preview, and the blank page is there. Hit Publish, and View Page, and still the blank page.

There IS something else. I hesitate to say so, in case it’s unrelated and ends up leading away from the Page Builder issue, but… I’ve also noticed another anomaly, which is on the subdomain I started this thread about AND on the new subdomain I just created. If I go to the Customiser, and select Additional CSS, create a couple of new classes and Publish the file and then return to the customiser, my css has gained some spurious characters that I didn’t put there. I’ve posted a support question about this elsewhere, at https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wp-custom-css-nnnnnot-working/#post-10016571 . Is it possible as suggested in that thread that something is adding these characters to some element of Page Builder too, and thus preventing it working?

    Hi Mike,

That’s possible. As this isn’t a widespread issue we’re really not to why this happening. To confirm, is this website hosted on the same server as your other website that works?

Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look?

    Hi Mike,

    Very sorry for the delay.

I just tried to set up the account but email received, unfortunately, doesn’t point to a valid WordPress directory anymore. Would it be possible for you to create us an account on a website where this issue is occurring? Sorry about this!

New account sent Alex. You’ll see that in the domain listed, no layout actually displays. This domain also places extra ‘n’ characters at new lines (use the ‘additional css tab under Customize Appearance, save, exit and reload the page, and the new lines are all replaced with ‘n’)

    Hi Mike,

Would it be possible for me to create a backup of your website for local testing? This will also allow me to confirm if this issue is as a result of the server the website is on.

    Yes of course Alex

    Hi Mike,

This issue appears to be the version of PHP being used. While WordPress can be used with PHP 5.2.14, certain plugins will have reliability issues with older versions of PHP, if they even work. WooComemrce, for example, recommends 5.6. WordPress will also be bumping the minimum supported version of PHP to 5.6 in a few months. At this time, the oldest version we test against is 5.4.

For reference, PHP 5.2 is no longer officially supported by PHP so it’s highly recommended you upgrade for security reasons.

Many thanks Alex, I’m going to look into what version of php is run on 1and1 and then get back to you

For reference should anyone else encounter a similar error, this issue was caused by the php version, which was the rather ancient 5.2.19. Having asked them to update it, they went as far as 5.6.33, and hey presto, Page Builder has returned to full functionality (the odd ‘n’ problem has also disappeared). Well done Alex for the diagnosis, and many thanks as always.
