I’ve done it to myself, how do I get it right.

I am using Vantage premium theme. I wanted to change some things. What I am having trouble with is the navigation menu. http://freeautomailinglists.com

I changed the hoover color okay, but
1 – The hoover color does not extent the full height of the menu block area.
2 – The text is not centered when the hoover color shows.

I wanted the menu taller (top/bottom padding) and change the background color and change the hoover background cover, text size, spacing and so on. Anyway. Most changes went well, but I can not get the hoover part to work correctly.

I am new to WordPress and I don’t really understand all the parts of WP CSS sections, like a menu has 4-5 sections. I am just kind of hit and miss. Confusing.

I did not know when I got the Vantage theme that the Premium version had options to change some styling, and I did now know about CSS Editor, so I installed and I am using CSSHero Editor. I really don’t want to start over with Vantage Styling and CSS Editor, I am sure they are great, but I’d just like to get these last couple of things done.

I know I messed things up with my CSS style changes, and I know I don’t deserve any help because it is my own fault, but if someone out there would offer some help, I would be grateful.

Thanks!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Marilyn

Thanks for reaching out. Great to have you with us :)

It looks like you might have made modifications to the Vantage parent stylesheet, style.css. All WordPress themes completely overwrite their own folder if a theme update is run. This means that it’s not safe to make changes to the theme files directly. Any changes made directly to theme files will be lost if you ever run a theme update. This is where Appearance > Custom CSS and/or a child theme is required. There is a lot of misunderstanding around this area. A child theme is only required if you’re editing theme files at a code level and even then you still need to know how to make use of the child theme.

    So, moving forward:

    1. Make all possible changes to the theme via:

    a. Appearance > Theme Settings.
    b. Appearance > Customize > Theme Design.

    2. If you need to change something that the above can’t handle use Custom CSS. I’d recommend installing our new Custom CSS plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/so-css. Once activated go to Appearance > Custom CSS. It has a visual editor to make life easy. Documentation is here: Page: Getting Started.

    /////

To recover we need to take the following steps:

    1. Go to Appearance > Editor > style.css. Copy the entire contents of that file to a text file and save it as your backup.
    2. Switch to another theme, hover over Vantage, click Theme Details > Delete bottom right.
    3. Re-install Vantage using the ZIP file from this location: Private Snippet
    4. You can install a ZIP from Appearance > Themes > Add New: Upload Theme. We cover manually updating here:

    https://siteorigin.com/basics/updating-theme-from-zip/

    5. Once you’ve restored go to Appearance > Customize > Theme Design and setup as much of the site as you can there.

THEN we can dive into your required customisations. Let me know what you can’t change and we’ll tackle those changes in an update safe manner.

I have made no changes to the parent theme that I know of. I have done a couple of WP sites and know about the child theme. I’ve only used the child theme with this site. I did add some styling to the Customize CSS that I got from using MicroThemer, the code was not working correctly, and is was conflicting with changes I was making when I installed CSSHero, so I deleted the code. Now there should only be CSSHero code and since I have the child theme selected, the changes should only be with the child theme. That said, I will think on re-installing the theme, but I fear doing more damage than good. The site is just the way I want it except for this menu problem.

Your time in writing a response is hugely appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve done a better check of your parent theme style.css file and it’s fine. No modifications there. I originally checked too quickly and must have been looking at the CSSHero changes.

How easy would it be to roll back the CSSHero changes to the menu? Appearance > Customize > Theme Design > Menu has settings ready for the menu. It’s always a bit tough to work with existing customisations and then correct from there since they aren’t ours. So if you could remove the CSSHero changes just for the menu then using the Customizer would be much easier.

You are so wonderfully helpful, and I can do this, but I need a little time. I get nervous. I have to be able to concentrate and so will need to find the right time. I can go into the CSSHero and copy the code changes and paste somewhere to retrieve later if needed, hopefully not. LOL If I can determine all of the code involved. LOL You are so awesome, thanks! I will post when I have it done.

    Hi, I Work Here

No problem. The other option is to try correct with CSSHero.

    OR

Email me a copy of your CSSHero CSS ([email protected]). I’ll be able to see what’s menu related there.

AM – No hurry. I know you are extremely busy. If it’s a few days or a week, that’s fine the site is working, so that’s good. Also, I will be out for a while. I am just so thankful you are helping me. :)

    Hi, I Work Here

Email sent :) Hope that helps.

AM – Thanks so much. I will see what I can do. — I am thinking my best course would be to copy and paste the CSSHero code into Customize CSS, and then delete the code you noted. I am looking forward to getting the site looking better. Again, Thanks!

    Hi, I Work Here

    For sure :)

    1. Backup all CSS Hero CSS.
    2. Remove and delete the plugin (if you want).
    3. Copy CSS to Appearance > Custom CSS minus the menu items.
    4. Head over to Customize > Theme Design > Menu and finish up there.

Sounds like a plan! Thanks ever so much!
