Error sending email, please try again later.

I’m getting the error “Error sending email, please try again later.” It just recently started occurring. I think just on or after January 2nd. I’m running SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle version 1.15.9 and Contact Form is set to “Active”. It’s not prompting me for an update at this time.

I’ve already tried turning off all plugins (except for WooCommerce 3.8.1, which the site has to have activated to display content at all, SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle, and SendGrid 1.11.8) and switching to the default Storefront theme for WooCommerce.

I’ve also confirmed that SendGrid is able to relay email from the website to any given email address. It appears to be a problem just with the SiteOrigin plugin itself.

Try it for yourself on a staging site at https://dev-vintagecharmhomestead.pantheonsite.io/contact-us/

What could be causing this error?

    Hi Webidextrous

    Thanks for posting.

Does the WordPress password reset form function normally? Private Snippet. Do you receive password reset instructions after making a request?

  2. 7 months, 2 days ago webidextrous

I’m not sure what you mean. The issue isn’t with resetting passwords. The issue is with the SiteOrigins Contact form not being able to process form input and send an email.

  3. 7 months, 2 days ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

The error usually occurs when there is an overall WordPress issue sending emails. A quick test would be to try out your password reset form and see if you receive the email.

  4. 7 months, 2 days ago webidextrous

The lost password feature of the site isn’t working right. It just shows the home page.

  5. 7 months, 1 day ago webidextrous

Ok, that was a problem on the live site, but the dev site lost password feature is working, both in getting access to the lost password feature and the fact that it does send me an email. So, email is definitely working on the site for that. Just not for SiteOrigins Contact form.

  6. 7 months, 1 day ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

Super, glad to hear you’re making progress.

On the dev site, one option would be to install Contact Form 7 plugin temporarily, create a quick test form and see if the issue is persisting with Contact Form 7. That would be a relatively quick way of narrowing down where the issue lies.

  7. 7 months, 20 hours ago webidextrous

I added Contact Form 7 to the dev site linked above and ran a test. The form returns “Thank you for your message. It has been sent.”. Try it at https://dev-vintagecharmhomestead.pantheonsite.io/cf7/

  8. 7 months, 20 hours ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for the update. Do you receive the email from the test form?

  9. 7 months, 19 hours ago webidextrous

Waiting to hear back on that from the site owner.

  10. 7 months, 19 hours ago webidextrous

Ok, yes, the form did submit and the email was received. What now with SiteOrigins Contact Form?

  11. 7 months, 19 hours ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

It would be best if the form was also sending to you so you could directly check for issues like the form landing in spam. Does this issue need to be resolved on the dev site? If so, a plugin conflict test would be next, after that, we could perhaps login, add our email address to the sending list and re-test.

  12. 7 months, 16 hours ago webidextrous

I have checked with my own email and it doesn’t land in spam due to the SendGrid SPF and DKIM setup we have in place. That was solved a while ago. The issue still seems to be that SiteOrigins Contact Form isn’t working. One question: does anything with the SiteOrigins plugin require the ability to write to the filesystem? I ask because the client is hosted on Pantheon.io, which locks down the live site as a read-only file system. The only exception is the wp-content/uploads directory, which has a symlink to a Valhalla (AWS) filesystem for uploading site media to the Media Library. A symlink for SiteOrigins can be set up to any directory in that filesystem, but I will need to know the path it’s expecting to write to in order to create it.

Hi, the writing setup should be fine.

Please, try installing https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-mail-logging/ and then attempting to send the SO Contact Form. Then, navigate to WP Admin > Tools > WP Mail Log. Is an error listed?

  14. 7 months, 3 hours ago webidextrous

I get the “Error sending email, please try again later.” in the form on the Contact Us page when I submit it, but WP Mail Logging shows the email as logged.

Thanks, was there more to it than the above? I’ve marked the above as private so only we can see it. Was there further text after Error: ?

To take a step back, the error is outputted by the SO Contact Form when the form is unable to successfully send. If you could rule out a plugin conflict, that would be ideal. The test is to temporarily deactivate all plugins not authored by SiteOrigin in one go and then test the form. The test should only take a minute or two.

  16. 6 months, 30 days ago webidextrous

There was no further text after the error.

I’ve disabled every plugin on the site, including SendGrid and WooCommerce, except for Site Origin Widgets Bundle.

    Still getting:
“”Error sending email, please try again later.””
at the top of the form when submitting the form. No email is sent.

  17. 6 months, 30 days ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look? You can create the account with the following email address:

    Private Snippet

Just navigate to UsersAdd New in your WordPress admin. Enter siteorigin for the username and Private Snippet for the email address. Make sure you’ve selected Administrator for the role and enabled the Send Password field so we receive the details.

Once we’re finished taking a look, you can delete this account. We’ll let you know when to do that.

  18. 6 months, 30 days ago webidextrous

User added as “siteorigin” with that email address to our dev site at https://dev-vintagecharmhomestead.pantheonsite.io/

  19. 6 months, 30 days ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

Thanks. It doesn’t appear as though the reset password email is arriving.

I can’t figure out how to make that private, so please change it once you’ve logged in.

  24. 6 months, 29 days ago Andrew Misplon Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for the access and updates.

I’m not sure what the issue is. We’re most likely looking at an edge case. It isn’t an issue I’ve ever come across. I’ll ask Alex here at SiteOrigin to take a look. Without diving into the server setup and setting up error logging, I’m not sure what else we could do from the WP admin. I’ve checked Query Monitor plugin, there aren’t any errors present.

Not out of lack of support for our products but out of practicality when looking at an edge case like this, are you sure you need to solve this? If CF7 is working, would that not be a viable alternative? I’d be happy to help if there are styling concerns.

Alex will follow-up once he’s taken a look. Thanks.

    Hi Webidextrous,

I just ran some tests on your website and I was able to get the contact form working. Your From Email Address is not a valid email that WordPress understands. Open the contact page you created and change your email to: [email protected]and then save. Open the page and fill out and submit the form. Open your mail client and check your inbox. If it’s not present, check your spam folder.

  26. 6 months, 29 days ago webidextrous

    Hi Alex,

I did get a test email when i changed it to a valid email address on the dev site. On the live site, vintagecharmhomestead.com, the From Email Address field is set to “[email protected]”. But a test of the form fails with the same error as before. I also can’t seem to get the form to move down on the page. It’s embedded using the Site Origin block in Gutenberg.

  27. 6 months, 26 days ago Alex S Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Webidextrous,

    Great to hear that helped!

Are you getting the same error message on the live website?
Please ensure the From and To Email Addresses aren’t the same. Most mail providers will hard reject emails with the same from and to emails so it won’t even appear in your spam inbox. if they aren’t the same and you’re still not getting the email, Would it be possible for you to send me an export of the linked page? To export a page, please open up the linked page in the editor and click the Layout button in the Page Builder toolbar. Then click import/export and then click download. Please upload the export to a 3rd party file hosting site such as WeTransfer (no email is required).

Regarding the placement of the form, that looks to be due to your theme – the content appears to be set to be overlapped by the heading. I would double-check your page settings as there should be a way to disable it. If you can’t find one, please reach out to the developers of the theme you’re using for assistance with this.
