Hi,
One of my clients sites was recently updated to WordPress 4.2.2 and now the Visual page/post editor is not working.
I have not installed any new plugins since the update so it must be related to the WordPress update.
I would really appreciate your help with this.
Thanks.
Hi Andrew
Please update Vantage, PageBuilder, Black Studio TinyMCE (if installed) and The Widget Bundle (if installed). The visual editor should then start working again.
Let us know how you get on
Magus
Hi Magus,
I’m running Vantage version 2.1.9, there doesnt seem to be an update for the theme?. I updated Black Studio TinyMCE, then updated the PageBuilder and doing that broke the custom home page rverting it back to the themes default 3 icons etc. So I rolled back to an older version of the site using WordPress 3.8 and this fixed all the issues including the visual editor problem.
I’m not sure how I can do all the updates without breaking the site.
Hi Andrew
Good to hear from you. Sorry about this hassle. Magus might be off for the evening and I might have dealt with this in the past so I’m going to be a little rude and jump in here.
(Really glad you have backups, good work).
We do ideally need to get you full updated.
Why no update pending
Is your premium order number correctly inserted at Settings > General > SiteOrigin Order Number. Even if it is, we do very occasionally see hosting setups that block auto-updates.
If your order number is there and you’re not seeing an pending at Dashboard > Updates then please update manually. That involves deleting the parent theme and uploading the new ZIP.
You can download the latest ZIP here: Private Snippet
Home Page Issues
Before you upgrade WordPress and everything else please make sure you have a copy of your home page under Pages. If your only copy of the home page is at Appearance > Home Page then go to Pages, make a new page and clone the current home page. Save it.
Backups
Ensure everything is backed up.
Upgrade
Not sure what else we can do to be ready. Once the above is done please upgrade everything. Ideally try all of this with a maintenance mode plugin running.
Once everything is updated, if you’re seeing problems please try plugin troubleshooting. De-activate all plugins not made by SiteOrigin or Black Studio. Re-test. If the issues resolve, re-activate your plugins one by one.
Another possible hurdle with these updates will be that we’ve made a few crucial updates to the Vantage parent theme. If you run into issues, test with the parent theme activated. If that resolves the problem, take a look at what might have been changed in the parent and update the child.
Let us know how you do.
Thank you for all the info. I am a little scared of doing all those updates on a large live site. However, I have a much smaller site using the same theme here: https://samanthasymons.co.uk/
This was running WordPress 4.1 (it didnt have the issue with the visual editor) and I’ve just successfully updated WordPress to 4.2.2 and also updated the Page builder and Black Studio TinyMCE. However, this is also showing no updates for the theme, its is currently running 2.3.3.
This site is running on a completely different cloud server to the other site. Do I really need to update the theme here too?.
If you wanted to update the theme then I’d run through the steps I outlined above about checking the order number is in place and running a manual update if it is and no update is pending.
You don’t have to run the Vantage update. If you’re not seeing any issues and everything is working correctly then you can leave Vantage where it is. None of the updates have been security related.
what maintenance mode plugin would you use and what benefits does it bring?
I use: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-maintenance-mode/.
It’s useful if you plan on de-activating plugins or doing any kind of work that you don’t want users to see. It’s a way of shutting the site down for a bit while you make changes. Totally optional.
I am still having problems making updates to the site. I update WordPress to 4.2, this stops the WordPress page editor from working so I update to the latest version of Siteorigins Page Builder but this then breaks the homepage.
I have a copy of the homepage in the Pages section but all the styling seems to get broken. I did try using a maintenance mode plugin but since I couldnt resolve the issue of the home page breaking when updating the page builder plugin I had to deactivate the maintenance mode plugin and restore the backup again.
I am in the process of cloning the site to a development URL so I can show you the problem first hand.
So sorry to hear about the hassle. If we could login and take a look, that would be best.
After looking into cloning the site for testing purposes I have discovered it is creating upto 10 different sizes of every image uploaded in the media library, this is making the site take up alot of disk space. Can I safely change the media settings in WordPress to zero to help reduce future disk space usage as I believe the theme has its own thumbnail sizes?.
Can I safely change the media settings in WordPress to zero…
Sorry, not quite following. Can you explain a little more about what you’d like to do.
You could also look into the image sizes being created. Vantage creates the following:
set_post_thumbnail_size(720, 380, true);
add_image_size(‘vantage-thumbnail-no-sidebar’, 1080, 380, true);
add_image_size(‘vantage-slide’, 960, 480, true);
add_image_size(‘vantage-carousel’, 272, 182, true);
add_image_size(‘vantage-grid-loop’, 436, 272, true);
Yes but WordPress also creates its own images sizes by default using the sizes set in the Settings > Media area. If I set these to zero will it stop creating those extra not required images?.
ok I have cloned the site here: http://test-stjosephs.nottingham.sch.com/
I updated it to WordPress 4.2 first, then I updated the Black Studio tinymce and Page Builder Plugins and as you can see it loses the homepage layout.
You can login with these details:
User: themesupport
Pass: foraturner15
I can use the backups to restore it back to how it was before the updates if required. I would really appreciate you logging in and taking a look.
Hi Andrew
Unfortunately the supplied link ends up as page cannot be found. Can you please confirm the link and that the server is not geolocking the site.
thanks
Magus
Hmmm, how annoying. The webhost told me to add the domain to my hosts file so I could view it, but they said any visitors would be able to see it fine.
I have messaged them to look into it for me and will get back to you hopefully pretty soon.

Hi Andrew
Would it be possible for you to roll back to before the updates please. I would like to check the update process out.
Thanks

Hey Andrew, if you login you’ll be able to read the message from Magus. Thanks.
I am logged in, I think I had to re-register/reset my password because I couldnt find my original login details.
I think Magus was just asking if the same account details could be added to the second URL so we could login there too. Thanks.
Sorry, I’ve added the same user details to the 2nd url now:

Sorted.
Hi Andrew
There were changes in the latest version of Vantage that were not being targeted by your child theme. I have made the necessary changes to your child-theme masthead.php and retargeted the specific elements in your child CSS
was changed to
Due to major changes in WordPress certain changes were needed in Vantage and other themes. We do our very best to not make changes that negatively impact child themes but sometimes we can’t help it.
Because it was such a major upgrade from your theme version to the current one you lose the custom Home Page. To get around this I cloned the existing Home Page before updating and then applied that clone to the new home page.
This in turn breaks the current styling you have created in your child CSS which will need to be re-targeted to the current page elements..
To make this easier we introduced Row and Widget Classes in the updated version of PageBuilder. If you edit the row or widget you can now add a Specific Class Name in the Attributes section on the right. Enter the classname without any preceding . or #. ie: ‘mywidget’
This can then be targeted directly in your custom CSS
Doing it this way means you are not reliant on having to target PageBuilder generated ID’s.
If you can finish off retargeting your CSS the site should then be back in full working order and looking the same as the pre-update version.

Thanks for all your help, much appreciated. Could you run through in what order you did each update and what stage you altered the child-theme masthead.php. Also what CSS changes you made to retarget the .
Cheers.

Hi Andrew
Step 1. Clone existing Home page with Content and publish as a public page.
Step 2. Update Plugins – PageBuilder, Black Studio TinyMCE, Meta-slider.
Step 3. Install SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle and enable button widget.
Step 4. Update Vantage Premium using the link in the earlier post. (breaks header alignment due to class changes for sidebar)
Step 5. Update WordPress. (this is what really breaks the site)
Step 6. Your home page contents get lost when WordPress completes it’s update by upgrading the Database. Open your home page editor under Pages and clone the backup copy you made earlier back onto it.
Step 7. Edit your child theme masthead.php.
find this line
and change it to
Find
and change it to
Step 8. Edit your child style.css
find all entries for ‘hgroup’ and change them to ‘.hgroup’. This will fix the header.
Change the entries in your style.css to match the new entries generated for your home page panels due to cloning. I would however recommend using the widget class option I described above. It will mean that if you need to clone anything in the future, your custom CSS will not need to be altered, and if you want to use the same styling on other widgets you just have to give them the same class name.
Hope this helps
Magus
Thanks for all the help. I have the test site now looking like the original, see earlier post for URL. The only thing I cant figure out is why the telephone number is not displaying in the top right header. The HTML is there but something must be hiding it.
Also regarding uploading the later version of the Premium theme, do you completely delete the older version via FTP first then upload the zip within WordPress?.
Hey Andrew
Your phone number is rendering as follows:
If you’re hardcoding that into a theme file then I can’t think of anything that would be stripping HTML. How is it being inserted?
If you have a moment, please, see our quick tutorial on manually updating:
Page: Updating a Theme Using a ZIP File
I just inserted it into the masthead.php in my child theme, heres the full code:
The phone number does appear for me. Can you confirm the URL we’re looking at?
This is a private message.
Thanks for the URL. I can’t seem to connect. Is it live for you?
Hi Andrew
Please add the following to your Custom CSS
