When I use the customizer to add a background image or a page background image (perhaps also masthead background image – haven’t tried), there seems to be no way to remove it after saving.

Hi leslieg,
This is a bug in the current version of Vantage (2.3). We’ve just fixed it and will be pushing an update soon. Very sorry about that.
This is still an issue on vantage premium 2.3.1. I can’t remove a background image from #main that isn’t even assigned anywhere?
If anyone wants to send me login details so I can take a look for this issue, you can create them for [email protected].

Hi Gary
Please could you confirm those login details via private email again. They don’t seem to be working on our side.
Thanks
Hey Greg, still not working for me either in 2.3.1. I’m using a child theme and have confirmed that the order number is indeed added to the site and that the site source mentions 2.3.1
Happy to give you access if need be. Would I use that email address as a new user password?
I’ll jump in and take a look. You’d just use the email address [email protected] as the user email. You can use any username, just make sure the user is a full admin account so I can check things properly.

Just added you as an admin user. I hope you have access….this is our stage environment and conceivably requires firewall access although I’m working from home and didn’t have to do it so maybe not.
Also, you will get to our custom auth page. Underneath the “gold password” button is a link for local account holders – you should use this link.

HI leslieg,
I haven’t been able to get past the CruzID login page. I can’t see the “local account holders” link. Could you try pointing me in the right direction?
I can’t see my initial message so maybe I gave you the wrong URL or something.
https://sites-stage.ucsc.edu/wp-login.php
You should see a typical WP login page but with our Logo and a yellow button. Under the yellow button is the text and link:
“**Non-UCSC Collaborators**
If you collaborate with a UCSC author but do not have a UCSC CruzID, login here instead.”
That login link simply opens up the standard local login fields for WP.
Does this work?

Any news on this bug? Had a user complain about it today.

Evidently not. I just added you to a test site on our production server, using the email address you provided above. In the customizer, it says “no image selected” and definitely not anything that says “remove image”. We should be up to date with our version.
OH. We have a child theme and I’m wondering if it is somehow not inheriting from the premium? Actually, I think we went down that road before and we determined it WAS inheriting.
Anyway, you should get the login info. If you don’t let me know.
The child theme says it is inheriting from Vantage Premium and our version of premium shows as: Version: 2.4.2

Fixed :) I just added a new image to Appearance > Customize > Background and it looks good. I added one rule to Custom CSS to cover the image as we don’t have that as an option for the background image.
Hope that helps.
Hi Andrew – sorry I don’t understand what you mean. I see the line in the CSS but I don’t see what it does. I can still see the background image…
Right now we have a workaround that the image can just be removed totally from the system which I think works but it seems odd that the theme doesn’t allow you to remove the background image. Is this on the roadmap for development? Standard wp themes show the current image selected and have options to remove or change the image that is currently there…
Everything looked normal when I was logged in. Let me take another look.
When you say: Right now we have a workaround that the image can just be removed totally from the system Please explain further the workaround.
Workaround: we go to the image library and delete the image.
Thanks.
We don’t have this problem locally so there is unfortunately something happening with your installation.
I just switched to Twenty Twelve UCSC and ran the same test. The problem persists so that rules out Vantage.
Next please try temporarily de-activating all non-SiteOrigin plugins and re-test. Hopefully everything works as normal. If it does you can re-activate your plugins one by one, each time running a test. Super tedious but unfortunately the only way.
Wow. You are right. Since others were reporting same thing for Vantage, it didn’t occur to me to check other themes.
I deactivated all plugins on my stage system and am still seeing the same behavior with all themes (child as well as out of the box).
Can you just confirm that in your own installation, you can go into the customize screen and, if there is a background set already from before (not the current customize session), you see an option to remove it?
In my local installation I do have a Remove button when logging back into the Customizer.
If the error is occurring with all plugins de-activated and a default theme like Twenty Fifteen then there is perhaps a core issue. Please could you confirm this last test. All plugins off and a default theme activated. Thanks.
I’ll try work out what we can do after this.
I’ve chatted to Greg about the issue. We’re unfortunately unsure as to what the problem is. I tried Googling the issue but didn’t come up with much. You could consider posting a question on the WordPress.org general forums and see if anyone knows what’s up.
Next steps might include doing an FTP file update of all the WordPress files. Following that you might look at a complete re-install.
It’s a really small item that’s the problem so I’d consider using Custom CSS to set the background, we can assist with that.
Hey Andrew. Thanks for looking into it further, you didn’t need to do that. No need to worry about the CSS because we realized we can also add a new image and then the remove button appears at least during that customizer session and it allows you to remove the background image. At this point it’s just strange and something I want to figure out but definitely don’t expect you guys to help given that it has nothing to do with vantage. I do appreciate what you’ve done though. I’ll have our app admin try some things like you suggest. Maybe he’s got some weird Apache setting or a php library off or something. If we do figure it out we’ll let you know in case anyone else brings it up.
Thanks for your understanding :) Hopefully a fix can be found.
Cheers for now :)
