Preloading Fonts

On www.oliviascoffee.co.uk when I run Google PageSpeed Insights it tells me there’s a real delay with preloading fonts. I can’t seem to fix it and it is caused by the Widgets Bundle slider. Can you help please?!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Craig

    Try checking your browser console, the preload that’s been added for the so-widgets-bundle is throwing a 404 error. Try changing it to /wp-content/plugins/so-widgets-bundle/css/slider/fonts/slider.woff or to the full path as was originally pasted here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/preload-key-requests-8/.

    At the moment you’re outputting:

    <link rel="preload" href="oliviascoffee.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/so-widgets-bundle/css/slider/fonts/slider.woff" as="font" type="font/woff" crossorigin="">

    Try changing to

    <link rel="preload" href="https://oliviascoffee.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/so-widgets-bundle/css/slider/fonts/slider.woff" as="font" type="font/woff" crossorigin="">

    I’ve changed it to – but still coming up with a 4+ sec delay on PageSpeed – I’ve cleared cache too :(

    Sorry, I should have said, thank you for taking the time to response, it’s appreciated!

    Hi Craig

    Our free support covers basic usage and troubleshooting. We’re a small operation with limited resources. We split up a free vs premium support scope to remain viable. The 404 was an easy catch which is why I could dive into this a little bit but on the whole, specific assistance with performance optimizations is, unfortunately, outside of our free support scope.

    If I look at the waterfall on https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.oliviascoffee.co.uk/wAZ7cgWL I don’t see a 4 second delay. There is a 948ms delay, most likely from the preload that’s been added. I’d try removing that and then re-check the waterfall.

    The actual file is taking 391ms to load:

    Thank you, again I appreciate your time. I understand your restrictions, I’m a teacher and have only done this site for a friend so have limited technical knowledge so I think the easiest thing to do is just remove these widgets. Thank you though for trying!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Thanks for your understanding.

    From what I can see, the 948ms delay is caused by the preload added to the header. I’d start by removing that and then re-looking at the waterfall. You should then, ideally, just be left with the second image above which is the actual file loading of 391ms.

    Oh ok, I’ll try that and see where I get to! Thank you!

    Hi, I Work Here

    If you compare the very last line of my last screenshot above and the last line of the screenshot below, you’ll see the difference with the preload removed. I’ll upload the screenshot separately so just check this on the forum not via email. Thanks.

    4.53 before, 3.38 now.

    Great – I’ve removed it and PageSpeed is still coming up with it being a problem but less of a problem ;) Thank you for your help, I’ll keep playing!

    Hi, I Work Here

    For sure :)

    If I load your site in Google Page Speed Insights I’m not seeing the big item you’ve mentioned. Google is mentioning a possible 10ms saving with regards to the slider woff file but there are much larger items higher up the list. Two screenshots here: https://imgur.com/a/iXdJ3Le.

    Hi, I Work Here

    I’ll ask Alex here at SiteOrigin to take a look and confirm for us. Thanks for the feedback :)

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Craig,

    Unfortunately, I’m getting the same results as Andrew. It’s possible you’re getting different results due to hitting the request limit (browsers will only load 10 – 20 requests at a time – you have 58 on your home page) so I would look into reducing the number of assets to reduce the chance of hitting this limit.

    Thank you both; I really appreciate your time and effort trying to help. I’d used WordPress because it was meant to be easy – this is out of my realms of understanding sadly. I’m a teacher and have only done this site for a friend :(

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Craig,

    I would consider installing a Lazy Loading plugin as that’ll delay the number of requests on page load. I’ve heard good things about a3 Lazy Load.

    Alex, you’re a legend, thank you!

    Wow – installed that plugin and out of the box I’ve gone from 59 to 73! Still says preload fonts is an issue but that’s a significant improvement. Thank you for your perseverance!
