We’re using a Theme Forest theme called Dental and it utilizes the SiteOrigin Widgets and upon a recent updating of plugins, certain icons stopped rendering correctly – they simply show an ampersand (&). You can see the site at the following address:
If you scroll down to the section with the text “Free Whitening For New Patients”, you’ll see the section with the incorrect icons directly below. Wondering what the heck is causing this and any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi,
I’ve had a look at your website and I can’t seem to see any issues with your icons. Are you still facing issues with your icons? If so, can you please show me a screenshot of the issue you’re facing? We don’t currently process attachments so you’ll need to upload the screenshot to a third party image hosting site like Imgur or vgy.me.
For reference, this is what I see:
Hi Alex,
I have changed the icons on the home page of the website to a font that worked until I figured it out. Here is what one of the inner pages looks like:
Hi,
Unfortunately, we’re unable to process attachments at this time. Can you please upload your screenshot to a third party image hosting site like Imgur or vgy.me? Sorry about this! Can you please link me to the inner page that’s facing this issue so I can inspect it?
Hey Alex –
thanks so much. here are the links to the screenshots…..

If you’ll notice, the icons are defaulting to an “ampersand” on some and an “upward right facing arrow” on others. It appears the only font library that’s working is Font Awesome. The others (Dental Icons, Elegant Icons, etc.) are defaulting to these incorrect icons. Below you’ll find some interior links where you’ll see this occurring.

Thanks again for you help and let me know if you have any other questions whatsoever.
Thanks!
Hi,
Thanks. Can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? You’ll need to clear all your caches after disabling your plugins. Please try saving the page after disablign all plugins to see if that helps.
If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.
Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.
If you aren’t using a SiteOrigin theme, then you can also try temporarily switching to one of the default WordPress themes to see if the issue is theme related.
Hi :) We’ve isolated the ampersand issue to PHP 5.2. WordPress recommends using PHP 7.3+. Please, reach out to your hosts and ask them to upgrade your server to PHP 7.3 or the closest version they can offer. Even PHP 5.4 would resolve this issue but for longevity, it’s best to be using PHP 7.3.
Hope that helps.
