Zerif lite and pagebuilder

I am new to WordPress. I am using the Zerif lite theme. I went into customize to have it look the way I want. Is it possible to use pagebuilder to overwrite those settings? How does this work? For example, I would like to replace the background picture I have currently on my home page with a hero where different album covers will be displayed every few seconds. I know that there is a hero widget in pagebuilder but how do I use it with Zerif lite?

Should I use another theme?

Another thing that puzzles me is that even if I chose Zerif-lite for my theme, then what are the pagebuilder layouts for? Do they overwrite the theme? I’m a bit confused as to the difference.
