Hello,
Every time I try to embed a YouTube video link, it produces a blurry thumbnail. This is with the OEmbed feature. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, what’s the remedy for clear thumbnails. When I use the full embed code method, the thumbnails are clear. So this has to be some weird issue with the OEmbed process.
Hi Multimastery
Do you have a public URL where we can take a look at what’s going on?
Thanks
Hi Andrew,
No I don’t. It looked too bad so I just left the embed code version published. But it’s a known issue that’s easy to reproduce.
Thanks.
If you could create a test page showing the issue, that would be helpful.
Here is a demo using the SiteOrigin Video widget, oEmbed option https://demo.siteorigin.com/corp/video-widget/.
I expanded the demo slightly, SO Video on the left and SO Editor widget on the right https://demo.siteorigin.com/corp/video-widget/.
Hi Andrew here’s a test link: bulkcomments.net/testing/
1st Vid: OEmbed
2nd Vid: Embed Code
Thanks. The image being fetched is here https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/Z6rVhJDYxKo/0.jpg. It’s 480 x 360. Based on the image size being fetched, the result is expected. I’m not sure how that can be changed. How is the first video embedded? It doesn’t appear to be using a SiteOrigin widget.
Here’s a new example using separate Siteorigin editor widgets for both: bulkcomments.net/test2/
1st Vid: OEmbed – I just input the link in text editor mode.
2nd Vid: YouTube Embed Code – I just pasted in embed code in the html editor as is.
Wow, just figured out that the problem was a plugin I had activated to try to speed up video load times. It’s call Lazy Load for Videos. I deactivated it for now and the problem cleared up instantly. Not sure if you’re familiar with that plugin or know anything else I can use so that YouTube vids won’t impact my site’s loading time…because they sure do drastically slow down site speed.
P.S. I also realized that I can’t get rid of YouTube recommending videos from other channels at the end of my video – unless I use their embed code and add ?rel=0 at the end. This will at least suggest other vids from my channel. So due to this I guess OEmbed is no longer an option for me.
Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear you’re making progress. I haven’t used any plugins in this area so, unfortunately, don’t have a recommendation. Indeed, you’d need to set rel=0 to keep the recommended videos list within the channel. https://developers.google.com/youtube/player_parameters.
Yeah, but as far as the rel=0, I see no way to get it to work with OEmbed method, so seems I’m forced to used the full YT embed code (which seems to impact site speed more) if I want add rel=0. Unless there’s some other way. Please enlighten me if there is.
As far as I’m aware, that’s correct, the iFrame embed method is required to make use of the query parameters.
