Would like to update but have made changes – whats the easiest way to a child theme

I would like to update our site but have made changes to some files and CSS. Can you help with a possible solution on how we can update keeping the changes and quickly to start using a child theme as recommened.

Do you supply a template child theme for vantage or shoul dw ecreate one. If so could you give us a few tips with that also?

we have a test server setup to mess around with but the live domain is http://www.glasgowdentureclinic.com.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi cdcglasgow

This should be handled with care. Start by backing up your current theme folder, that’s available via FTP on your server at /wp-content/themes/vantage, make a copy of that vantage folder.

Next you’ll need to get the original theme folder. For this step you might need to email us ([email protected]) and let us know which version you’re on so we can email you that same version. If you’re upgrading from free to premium then that’s easier as all our versions are available here:

    https://wordpress.org/themes/vantage/developers/

When you have your current vantage folder and the original vantage folder side by side on your desktop you can then use a program like DiffMerge to start comparing each file against the original: https://sourcegear.com/diffmerge/.

All edited files must be copied into a child theme. All edited CSS selectors can go into the style.css file of a child theme. Don’t copy the entire stylesheet into the child theme.

Here is a child theme you can start with: https://siteorigin.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/vantage-child-vanilla-enqueue.zip.

Hopefully this explanation makes sense. Let us know how you come along.
