Hello, I have 4 or 5 similar sites, all created with the Sydney Theme and SiteOrigin Page Builder. All have been working great until recently. Suddenly one site won’t allow me to edit pages as the Visual & Text editor options are missing. I have deleted and reloaded the Plugin. I have also tried deactivating all other plugins (which I am using on the other sites without problems) and it’s still not working. Any thoughts?
Hi, thanks for posting, perhaps try installing the Classic Editor plugin and see if that helps: https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-editor/.
I’ve been using the Classic Editor Plugin on all these sites ever since the WordPress update forced the Gutenberg editor. All sites work great with it and I was using it with success on the site with the problem as well. It wasn’t until I went in to make changes to a Page that I noticed it was gone. Just noticed another weird thing. I was going to use the Post editor to crop a screenshot of what showed up when I hit Edit on a Page and it’s acting weird on Posts as well. It shows the “Visual” “Text” and “Pagebuilder” tabs (which aren’t there on pages) but they aren’t loading correctly. Makes me think now that it might be a WordPress or perhaps a problem with a recent theme update. I’ll continue to dig deeper but all your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
If you could temporarily deactivate all plugins except for those authored by SiteOrigin and then check the problem, that’ll be great. That’ll let you know if a conflict is a problem.
I read up on all that prior to starting this thread. Deactivated all of them, no change. Also deleted and reloaded Pagebuilder and Widgets Bundle. Again, no changes.
The complete test would be all plugins except for Page Builder deactivated.
Switch to Twenty Seventeen theme or another default theme.
Re-test, does the issue persist?
If it does, you’ll need to enable WP_DEBUG in your WordPress wp-config.php file and see if any errors are printing when viewing the problem.
Also, check for JS errors: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors#Step_3:_Diagnosis
I might have had Pagebuilder and Bundle going at the same time but all else were deactivated. I will try again with only Pagebuilder going.
Then I will try the Twenty Seventeen theme. And if tha doesn’t change things, I’ll try your other suggestions. The crazy thing is I have a few sites that have all the same Theme and plugins and those are working fine, which leads me to believe it’s not a plugin conflict.
I’ve had a few internet connection issues and it leads me to thinking that perhaps I was reloading a page and the page didn’t load correctly, as in all the code didn’t load correctly. site seems to work fine other than not being able to edit any pages.
The digging continues.
Let us know how it goes. Thanks.
Will do. Thank you.
Just remembered why I had to reactivate the Widgets bundle. Once deactivated, I tried to edit a section and received this message.
You need to install SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle to use the widget SiteOrigin_Widget_Editor_Widget.
Save and reload this page to start using the widget after you’ve installed it.
That’s fine. You can run the baseline test with Page Builder and Widgets Bundle activated.
OK, I’ll continue on.
No change with a different Theme nor with the recent Page Builder update. I’ve got a few other things to tackle, will get back to this later today. I’m not the most tech savvy so doing the whole WP_DEBUG thing might take some time for me to figure it out. But I never give up. LOL
That would be the next step you’d need to take.
Enable WP_DEBUG: https://codex.wordpress.org/WP_DEBUG
Enable WP_DEBUG Log: https://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress#WP_DEBUG_LOG
Here is how to edit wp-config.php: https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-edit-wp-config-php-file-in-wordpress/
Once both are enabled. Recreate the error and then check debug.log located in the /wp-content/ folder.
Also, check for JS errors when the error occurs: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors#Step_3:_Diagnosis
Okay, after jumping through a couplew other hoops, I was finally able to reach this point. There was no built-in code for the WP-DEBUG (as this site was created a very long time ago) but was able to get the hosting service to create it as well as the log code. After adding that to the config.php file, it showed this 77 times.
[04-Apr-2019 16:59:17 UTC] PHP Notice: Undefined property: stdClass::$post_name in /nfs/c06/h04/mnt/86798/domains/axxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com/html/wp-content/plugins/easy-faq-with-expanding-text/faq.php on line 24
And this Log isn’t from a page that I’m using the FAQ’s plugin on. Am I correct in thinking there’s an issue with that plugin? And I also had that plugin deactivated and the issue with the Editor is still present.
Thanks.
If the debug constant isn’t present in wp-config.php it can be pasted in and the file saved. The same with debug log.
Yes, the plugin mentioned has a problem but it isn’t necessarily related. If you deactivated when testing then that would have ruled it out.
Also, check for JS errors when the error occurs: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors#Step_3:_Diagnosis
Darnit! I was hoping I found something. I knew it wouldn’t be that easy. LOL
Just tried it again with the plugin deactivated just to confirm and unfortunately still no different.
Looks like I’m on to figure out the JS errors thing. Thanks again for your help.
It’s quite easy. Recreate the issue, open the console and check for errors. Let us know how it goes.
Okay, I added the code and this was added to the Log..
[04-Apr-2019 17:36:12 UTC] PHP Notice: Undefined index: hpt_headertitle in /nfs/c06/h04/mnt/86798/domains/axxxxxxxxxxxxx.com/html/wp-content/plugins/hide-page-and-post-title/hide-page-and-post-title.php on line 85
And this is another Plugin that was deactivated during the testing.
If it was deactivated then most likely not linked.
In WordPress, view a page with an issue. If you’re in Chrome, right-click anywhere in the page, click Inspect then click Console, are there any errors?
I’m in Firefox
It’s very similar, instructions are provided here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors#Step_3:_Diagnosis. Thanks :)
Yikes! LOL Difficult to get it copied as shown.

3 things are highlighted in pink. Would those be the “problems”?
Could you perhaps take a screenshot and upload to https://imgur.com/upload.
That’s what I’ll do. It will take a bit of time.
To confirm, you should be viewing the WordPress page where the tabs/Page Builder are showing an issue and then check the console. Thanks
I just Downloaded the photo to the link above. Hopefully you received it.
This is what shows when I go to a Page created with the Page Builder. If I attempt to edit any of the Widgets, this is all that shows up. No editor to speak of.
And yes, all that “stuff” up above is what showed when I clicked a Site Origin Editor widget to edit it.
Thanks.
Each time you upload to Imgur it creates a post with a unique URL. You’d need to send us the URL in order for us to view it.

Thanks. Could you perhaps send us a screenshot of the console errors?
Something like the above would be most helpful. The page with the console open so we can see the errors. If you’d like to zoom your page in slightly so we can make them out, that’ll be even better. Thanks :)
Okay, will do. Again that will take some time.

Dangit, I never saw the email above. I’m having so many internet problems this entire thing is driving me insane. LOL
Let me try it again.
That’s great, thanks. Let me chat with the team and come back to you.
Try going back to your wp-config.php file and after debug and debug log, add the following:
Okay, I added that code to the file. Not sure what to do next.
All of the pages look similar to the screenshot you posted. It isn’t until I go to one of the SiteOrigin Editor Widgets that the problem actually occurs that is shown in the second photo I uploaded.
Thanks. Have you checked the problem since setting CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS to false?
Nothing new has shown up in the Log since I added the CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS to false code.
Here’s the latest screenshot from the page when attempting to Edit the Widget.

The assets that the editor requires, both ours and the core WordPress editor, are missing. I don’t know what the cause of that is. If you deactivate all plugins except for the Classic Editor, I think you’ll find the regular Visual and Text tabs aren’t functioning.
Here is one of the many forum discussions on this issue: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14352407/jquery-error-tinymce-is-not-defined-on-wordpress-admin-panel
—
If you go to Users and edit your username, please check that Disable the visual editor when writing is not enabled.
Now that you’ve set CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS to false you can try re-running the conflict test. That would be:
1. Clear any caching/optimization or web host level cache added to the WP admin.
2. Deactivate all plugins except for Page Builder and the Widgets Bundle.
3. Switch to Twenty Seventeen theme.
4. Re-test the issue.
Here is another possibility: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/tinymce-is-not-defined-8/. That user had a redirect in their website’s htaccess file which was causing the js folder to not be found where it should be.
In addition to the above test. Try to see if the issue is related to SiteOrigin. That test would be:
1. Clear any caching/optimization or web host level cache added to the WP admin.
2. Deactivate all plugins including SiteOrigin plugins but leave the Classic Editor plugin enabled if you use it.
3. Add a new page or post, does the Visual tab have the regular editor buttons available?
Hmmmm… okay, let me do another test then. I cleared my basic cache and cookies just a few days ago, no change, and I don’t believe I have any other cache added.
Let me see if I can create a new page with just the Classic Editor.
The thing that baffles me most is this is definitely only affecting this site. I have a few very similar sites setup in nearly the exact same way in regards to theme and plugins. And they work fine. As this one was until a few weeks ago.
Okay, all plugins deactivated except Classic Editor. I tried to create a new Page. Both the Visual and Text buttons are there. However the “Visual” doesn’t change the available buttons. No Headings, no Centering, no difference at all. Just the same limited single row of buttons that the Text tab shows.
Thanks for confirming.
When the core WordPress TinyMCE editor issue in the Classic Editor is resolved, the SiteOrigin Editor will function normally.
Unfortunately, I have to leave this here. We’re very limited in terms of how much time we can put into free support questions while still remaining viable. Hopefully the above helps you get going. If you Google the issues you’ve found in the JavaScript console you’ll find a range of different support discussions on this topic with a similarly wide range of suggestions for resolution. Concatenate scripts is the big one we’ve already tried. You’ll see that mentioned a bit. You can also consider asking your hosts to roll the site back assuming you know when it was last functioning normally and assuming they have a backup from that date.
Thanks so much for all your time, I really do appreciate it. When I first discovered it, I was hoping it was just a quick fix. Now I see it’s very deeply entrenched and will require a ton of work. Not sure what I’ll do from here forward. Hopefully I won’t have to make any changes to the site in the near future. hahahaha
For sure. Really hope you can resolve the problem. Have a look around at the support topics on this and perhaps try a few of the other ideas mentioned that we didn’t get to.
Will do. I have to resolve it at some point, that’s for sure. And thanks again for all your help. You really went above and beyond.
No problem. Sorry we couldn’t get to a resolution. Good luck.
Cheers for now :)
