Vantage : widgets keep disappearing

Hi,

Trying to configure a side bar, I add some widgets. At first they show on the pages just fine but after a while they just disappear and pages show without sidebar.

What is happening?!?!

(BTW this is not the only weird thing about this theme)

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Rolf,

To confirm, are there widgets on your widgets page? You can check this by navigating to WP AdminAppearanceWidgets.

If there is, is the sidebar disabled? You can check this by navigating to WP AdminAppearanceCustomize, Theme DesignSidebar and ensure Sidebar Position isn’t set to None?

Do you have a public URL where we can take a look at what’s going on?

Hi, the “Sidebar Position” is set to “Right” and when I add a text widget (for example) to the sidebar it shows on the right side as expected. But after a while (working on the site content) the widgets just disappears. It’s no longer on the front end and no longer under the Sidebar on Appearance > Widgets.

Each time it gets moved to the “Deactivated widgets” section.

There are no other admins on the site and it’s certainly no me. I’ve never seen such weird behavior… as if the theme gets deactivated or forgets the sidebar names and starts fresh.

    Hi Rolf,

That’s odd. I’m really not too sure why that’s happening. Hm. Do you have any plugins installed that allows you to manage widgets differently or anything like that?

Is the time to deactivation consistent? As in, “No matter what, X minutes after activation the widget will be deactivated again”? Or is it randomly deactivated?

Hi Alex, I have not been able to determine if it is a fixed amount of time before the widget disappears. There are no plugins that manage widgets (or sidebars) running on the site.

As it is the same site as Thread: Vantage : Cannot switch on Custom Homepage I’ve asked the site owner (I’m just the one that installed WordPress and then the theme, and now trying to help out with these two weird issues) if I can create an account for you so you can take a look yourself. Will keep you posted on the other thread.

In any case, thanks for your attention :)

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Rolf,

Thanks. To clarify, is there a specific widget you’re okay with me adding to the sidebar to test with? It may need to be in your sidebar for a few hours so I want to ensure you’re okay with that widget being on the frontend.

Hi Alex, it does not really matter. There are a whole bunch of widgets in the “deactivated widgets” list that you can try. Or ad a new one like a text widget (with text saying it’s for testing so the other admin leaves it alone maybe) as the site is not completely ready yet anyway :)

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Rolf,

Okay so I’ve run a few tests and each of the widgets I added were disabled. Hm. This might sound silly, but it is it possible the other admin(s) are disabling them?

If not, can you please disable all non-SiteOrigin plugins and then add a widget to one of your sidebars. Does the widget deactivate? This will likely take some time to confirm so I would run this test over night.

Haha, yes, not silly at all. I’ll downgrade the only other admin to editor to be sure…

One related thing I noticed is that sometimes all these test widgets (that used to be in the sidebar) appear in the “Deactivated Widgets” section on Appearance > Widgets, but other times that section is completely empty. How would that be possible?

I’ll do the test with all other plugins disabled tonight…

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Rolf,

How did the plugin conflict test go? Did the widgets deactivate automatically with all of the other plugins deactivated?

Regarding your question, I’m not too sure. To clarify, when none of the previously activated widgets appear in the list, do you see any of the widget areas on the right?

Hi Alex, it’s totally inexplicable: both the issue with the disappearing widgets and the front page (other thread) seems to have resolved by themselves. Nothing has changed on the site, no settings no plugin de/activation whatsoever. Only the VPS has a reboot which will have cleared the MySQL query cache…

No idea how or why only this particular site (with Vantage theme) suffered from something that seemed to be ‘stuck’ there but it does not occur anymore. The widgets can be added and removed without weird behavior and the front page can be switched from showing blog posts to a page back and forth as normal.

I’ve never seen this happen before but I can only conclude it had nothing to do with Vantage. Thank you very much for the help your kind support and my apologies for the lost time!

    Kind regards,
    Rolf
