I have added the gallery widget using the layout builder. When you click on an image, the image is displayed, and a ‘leave a comment’ box is also displayed. How do you disable comments within this widget? On the right side of the page when editing, the ‘Allow comments’ box is not checked.
Please advise.
thank you for your help.
Hi Booth
Thanks for reaching out.
Does the image open in a lightbox? If so, are you using Jetpack? If so, you might be looking at the Jetpack Carousel module. There isn’t a setting to disable comments but you can use the function provided by Jetpack https://jetpack.com/2013/05/01/remove-comments-carousel/. The function can be added to your site using the Code Snippets plugin.
Andrew,
Thanks for your reply!
I don’t think it opens in a ‘lightbox’, it looks like it just opens chosen image on a new page, with my same masthead and background color. There is a ‘previous’ and ‘next’ button above the image, and a below the image is a white line, then below that, is a comment section.
I don’t see any indication of something called ‘jetpack’ installed, or that I am using it.. Is this something you recommend that I use? We are trying to do this without premium features for right now, so I have been avoiding addons.
cheers.
Thanks for the feedback. You don’t need Jetpack.
One option would be to use a child theme to manually remove the comments section from the attachment template. Another option is to use the Disable Comments plugin. Once activated, go to SettingsDisable Comments and select the Media option, finally,Save.
So, by installing a child theme, you mean using the layout builder on that page, and installing a theme? Sorry, I am new to wordpress and learning the lingo. I can also try the plugin, but I do not want to disable comments for the whole site, just the gallery.
thank you for your help!

The child theme route will take some custom development. The easiest solution would be to install the Disable Comments plugin, I gave it a try and it works nicely by introducing a Media option for disabling comments. The child theme route would require you to install a Vantage child theme, migrate your Customizer settings from the parent to the child theme using Customizer Import/Export plugin. You’d then need to copy the attachment.php file from the parent to the child theme and remove the comments section. It’ll require some light code editing work and also the use of FTP or Hosting File Manager to move files around. The plugin route is recommended if you haven’t done work like this before.
