just wanted to move my thread because i didnt like that title constantly appearing at the top of your forums
but thanks andrew, i have downloaded the new plugin but wont be able to implement it til i have access to my other machine again . . . but you taught me a new term: hotfix. do you have a resource you recommend for learning how to do this yourself? or should i just google it and sort through the results?
hey andrew my dashboard is not working at all . . . wont let me update, and i cant navigate to most parts of the control panel other than updates. when i click posts, pages, plugins, etc it takes me to a blank page on my site saying page not found
the dashboard is working now. my site was just in maintenance from updating i believe . . . just didnt give me any indication that it went through once i pressed update.
so i have swapped out all of the visual editors for the one you recommended andrew, everything came out perfect except for places where the text should be bolded. italics works fine. you can find the bolding error within the widget on pagebuilder (example, second visual editor block on my ‘need a freelancer?’ page) and in the regular visual editor on that same legit work from home gigs post.
please pick this up . . . i need to bold my posts!
Thanks Zach, I’ll grab this shortly. Appreciate the feedback.
Starting from the top:
A good WordPress theme workflow would be to do everything you can with the theme and it’s built in settings. Next you’d use plugins to achieve extended functionality, but sparingly, just as many as you need to get the job done. Next you’d use Custom CSS to extend or customise items. CSS ideally needs to be learnt in conjunction with HTML. There are now a huge amount of resources out there on HTML and CSS, off the top of my head:
http://www.codecademy.com/
http://teamtreehouse.com/home (premium)
http://learn.shayhowe.com/advanced-html-css/ (one I like)
http://css-tricks.com/
Your body font is Alef 700, try changing that to a 300 or 400 weight. 700 is a bold weight, meaning all of your text is currently bold, this is why you can’t bold any specific piece of text.
Thanks for the resources bro.
Ok I am seeing symple shortcodes even has some difficulty in visual/text mode . . . is there another shortcodes plugin that you know of that is compatible with vantage?
Just curious, why do you recommend against page builder for posts? The layout I want for this post, page builder seems like my only option given the problems with symple shortcodes.
I unfortunately don’t. Have you tried just inserting the shortcode you need in the HTML tab of the Visual Editor widget?
I guess I just feel the repetitive nature of posts makes it more suitable to using the regular editor. That said you’re more than welcome to run Page Builder there too.
so shortcodes work better in the html then? i did not know . . . so the main disadvantage of building in pagebuilder is that i would lose anything built with it if i changed to a non pagebuilder them?
and do you know how i can ad a box that will come up in the sidebar of my page and run with my post? i just want my categories and other tags to stay with the reader as the page scrolls.
thanks again.
To be added into Page Builder shortcodes need to be added via a widget. Not all work but I’ve found the HTML tab of the Visual Editor widget usually works the best.
Page Builder is portable so your it should continue to run and format well irregardless of the theme activated. There will of course be exceptions to this. Those exceptions could be considered a disadvantage of working in the plugin, yes.
I unfortunately don’t know of an absolute positioning widget for the sidebar. If you find a good one perhaps let us know.
Well I ended up posting my last post with the page builder, but it doesnt look the like the pagebuilder is compatible with digg digg’s floating social bar . . . so im going to try to create the post again with the regular visual/text editor for posts.
is the ‘text’ portion of that editor the same as the html tab in visual editor widgets? what im asking is if you think the shortcodes are more likely to work properly if i place them there . . .
and i found a widget for fixing posts. working well so far. very simple to use. its called Q2W3 Fixed Widget.
Also, is there a way to make a linked table of contents that will scroll the user to any section they click on?
Yes, shortcodes are more likely to work in the Text tab than in Page Builder as that’s were most authors expect them to be used.
You can create anchor links by linking to ID’s in the page.
Here are two tutorials you might look at for that:
http://www.echoecho.com/htmllinks08.htm
http://help.typepad.com/anchor-tags.html
should i make the anchor tags the inner most layer if i’m linking to text on a page, where that line of code has a lot of modifiers?
and is there a way to get rid of the hyperlink blue (and hover orange)? or do i just need to a blank line above the section i want to link to?
idk what happened to the link colorations aspect but it is gone now
Not really following there. Here is how it works in summary:
To change overall link colors try the following under Appearance > Custom CSS:
