Hi there,
I’m using the headline widget with page builder and I would like the headline to span the width of the page (one column), but the sub headline to span three columns to make it easier to read. I’m using Vantage Premium theme and this is in desktop view. Can anyone help? Thanks.
Hi Nick,
Sorry for the delay.
I highly recommend switching to the SiteOrigin Headline widget as it’s far more customizable. Can’t see it? Please navigate to WP AdminpluginsSiteOrigin Widgets and activate the headline widget.
To answer your question, this isn’t possible as the widget was never designed around this (the SiteOrigin Headline widget wasn’t either). I would instead recommend splitting the widget up into two separate rows. For the first row, set the row layout to full width stretched.
Sorry mate. :(

Hi Alex
Thanks for coming back to me. I think the Vantage theme is excellent and well thought through.
I actually tried your solution last week but I found because the headline widget has sub-headline text there was a large gap between the two rows, even if there was no text entered into the sub head. Can this gap be reduced?
Hi Nick,
It sounds like the Divider is visible. Please try using it again and see if setting the divider style to none removes this spacing for you.
Hi Alex,
Thanks for coming back to me again. I still have spacing.
Thanks.
Hi Nick,
Do you have a public URL where we can take a look at what’s going on? If you need to keep this URL private from other users, just select “Private Reply” on the bottom right of the comment box.
This is a private message.
Hi Nick,
Okay so that spacing isn’t directly related to the widget itself – it’s row bottom margin. Please open the row that houses the SiteOrigin Headline widget and head over to the row styles sidebar. Open the Layout settings group and set the bottom margin to 0. How does that look?
Still some padding? Try removing the default row padding by adding the following CSS to WP Admin > Appearance > Custom CSS:
You might also need to install the SiteOrigin CSS Editor.
Hi Alex,
PERFECT! Thanks so much for your assistance.
Hi Alex, I have another issue. I’m trying to change the colour of the text in a Twitter feed widget that is located in the footer. I only want to change the colour of the text in this widget. Can you help. It’s the same URL as before.
Also, a widget that is located in the header was obscuring the logo in tablet view. I followed the advice on here (on a different thread) and although it has solved the problem, I would like the widget to be in the centre, underneath the logo rather than to the left.
Thanks so much for your help.
Nick
Hi Nick,
Please navigate to WP AdminAppearanceCustom CSS. Please add the following CSS to correct the twitter widget color.
This issue was caused by the odd usage of .entry-content in the widget.
Regarding the widget in your header, try adding the following CSS:
Is that how you wanted it?
You might also need to install the SiteOrigin CSS Editor.

Hi Alex,
Thanks so much for that – perfect on both issues.
Really appreciate your help.
Hi Alex,
I have another question for you.
Is it possible to have a default image on the Post Carousel widget, if there isn’t a featured image in the post.
Thanks.
Hi Nick,
Unfortunately, this isn’t possible at this time. It’s a really good idea however so I’ve logged it as a feature request. Hopefully, we’ll be able to add this in a future update.
Sorry mate.
Hi Alex, no worries at all. I've made a default image that the users can use.
One final question – the site is now live, but it seems a bit slow. Could you recommend how I could speed this up? The back end is especially slow. I have used a cache plugin which has helped a bit.
Thanks.
Hi Nick,
I personally recommend WP Super Cache and Better WordPress Minify (it handles minify better than WP Super cache). Outside of that, I would recommend looking into plugin reduction and optimisation of all images to ensure optimal file sizes – a neat tool for that is EWWW Image Optimizer although it can’t be a manual optimisation.
Regarding the slow backend, wow many plugins do you have? I’ve typically only seen that to happen when you have a (very) a large number of plugins. Maybe try disabling a few to see if that helps?
Hi Alex, thanks for your reply. I will give your recommendations a try.
I have 14 plugins active including the Site Origin ones – is that considered a lot? I will disable them one by one to see if it makes a difference.
Hi Nick,
14 is actually really quite good. I would estimate the average at around 25. With that said, depending on your how heavy your plugins are it might be equivalent (in terms of overall performance requirements) to a lot more of plugins.
Let me know how your tests go mate.
