Troubleshooting a strange undefined error.

Hi, we have been attempting to troubleshoot a strange error with one of our users. I’ll try to include as much relevant information as possible.

With the same user on two different subsites of two different WPMU installs on two different servers this user is having issues with things not saving. We have clearer errors on one that the other.

Case 1 involves inserting video links (insert video TinyMCE/Advanced TinyMCE command in a text edit widget) to a server site. Page updates result in the following error:

The backup of this post in your browser is different from the version below. Restore the backup
This will replace the current editor content with the last backup version. You can use undo and redo in the editor to get the old content back or to return to the restored version.

When the widget is reloaded for editing instead of a link “Undefined” shows in the dialog box and we get the following error in the Javascript console:

Field [widgets[c155][text]] could not be processed and was skipped – Cannot read property ‘body’ of undefined

Case 2 involves inserting H5P content (https://h5p.org/) in a text edit widget. (I have to contact our user and get specific errors on this case but it seems to be dropping links in a similar way to case 1).

The kicker on both of these cases is that the superadmins on both sites are able to edit/insert the content with no issues. (Which would tend to rule out plugin conflicts, perhaps not entirely, but it would seem like it). The user has admin roles on both sites.

The plugin lists on the two sites are fairly different:

Site 1 (A fairly complex specialized site)
(WCM) PHPMailer SMTP Settings (custom from a blog post)
Advanced Access Manager (although we have not yet implemented permissions)
Attachment Taxonomies
Commons in a box (build on Buddypress)
BP Group Blogs
BP MPO Activity Filter
BP Social Media Profiles
Buddypress Biography Sync (custom from Commons in a Box developers)
Codepinch
Content Aware Sidebars
Custom Post Type Widgets
Duplicate Page
Enhanced Media Library
Gravity forms + Custom Post Types + Survey add on
Imageinject
More privacy options
NS Cloner
SO Page Builder/Widgets Bundle
SSL Insecure Content Fixer
Tiny MCE Advanced
Toolset Types (formerly wp-types)
Unconfirmed
Wordfence Security
WP-PostRatings

Also some functions.php code

Case 2
Cookies for Comments
Exploit Scanner
Gravity Forms
H5P
Hide Admin Bar Multisite Wide
iframe
Jetpack
Kadence Toolkit
Limit login attempts
Multisite Enhancements
Network mass email
Network privacy
NS Cloner
oAuth Twitter Feed for developers
SO Page Builder/Widgets Bundle
SO CSS
Wordfence
Wordpress importer
WP fail2ban
WP MigrateDBPro + addons

The two plugin lists are fairly different. We’ve been trying to line up similarities and differences to determine what is happening with this user. It seems account based as we have tried different hardware including the same machines the SuperAdmins can work successfully with.

It does seem to have some relation to the WP Auto-draft/Auto-save functionality. I cannot for certain say that it is related to Site Origins Page Builder at all, but this user does most of her work in it so that may just be were the issues manifest.

So, I’m wondering if you maybe have encountered anything similar or can point us in some problem solving directions.

Thanks,
Troy

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Tory,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues. :(
We haven’t come across an error exactly like this before. To me, this sounds like it could be a role issue with the admin account which explains why the super admin is able to, without issue, do this. I wouldn’t agree with this ruling out a plugin conflict either – in fact it makes it more likely.

As such, can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? You’ll need to clear all your caches after disabling your plugins.

If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.

Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.

If you aren’t using a SiteOrigin theme, then you can also try temporarily switching to one of the default WordPress themes to see if the issue is theme related.

Thanks Alex. It does appear to be a role issue of some sort. I confirmed by:

    1. Having another site admin (not a super admin) attempt the video link. No success
    2. Giving the person with the original problem super admin status. The video link seems to work

Now I just need to figure out why.

    Cheers,
    t

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Twelch,

I would recommend installing a role manager plugin like User Role Editor, then compare the capabilities between the roles to see if something jumps out.
