I have tried creating a child theme for a Corp-based site but I end up with a sidebar full of the front page content floated over the actual content. I have subsequently attempted to use the zip download on the SO site but the result is the same. Setting the sidebar width to zero merely moves the floated sidebar down under the actual content.
It is clearly a sidebar issue since swapping the sidebar location from right to left swaps the rogue sidebar.
Any ideas?
Hi Timothy
Thanks for posting.
Please, let us know what you’re trying to accomplish, we’ll see if we can help.
Initially, quite simply to create a child site identical to the original theme.
I have run through all the settings on the main theme and the child theme to ensure they are the same but I cannot eliminate the sidebar on the child theme (in fact, it is not even a sidebar, it is the whole front page compressed into the sidebar space). Both the sidebar position and width settings appear to function to a degree since the position is affected by the right/left selection and setting the width to zero removes the sidebar from the actual sidebar position but in fact simply moves it down under the main sections.
The site is catherinemayatlani.com
Thanks for your help
Sure. Please, use the child theme provided here: Page: Child Theme.
When you change themes from the parent to the child, the slug changes. If you want to make a copy of Customizer settings, leave the parent activated, use this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/customizer-export-import/. Export your settings and then activate the child theme and import your settings file.
If you want to remove the sidebar from all pages, go to AppearanceWidgets and remove all the widgets from the Sidebar widget area. If you want to remove the sidebar from some pages, edit the page concerned and use the Page Settings area in the right column to change the Layout from Default to No Sidebar.
Already have – same result
There are no widgets in the widget section and it isn’t widgets that are being displayed. It is the content of the front page in an apparently floating div with a z-layer setting ±0
Thanks. Please, activate the child theme so we can take a look.
A screenshot of the ‘effect’
OK – activated
It would seem to be a problem in the live preview.
I was reluctant to activate the child theme because it appears corrupted but now I have done so, the site itself is fine and the parent theme shows corruption in the Live Viewer
When you mention Live Viewer do you mean Appearance > Customize or the Live Editor in Page Builder by SiteOrigin. At the moment, I’m unable to replicate the problem in either. Please, try logging out of WordPress and then loggin back in again, is there any change?
Appearance -> Customize. I do not remain logged in but when I reconnect the result is always the same.
I tried uploading a screenshot but there was a mistake in the URL
The ‘overlay’ on the right is what I am referring to. It is a replica of the underlying page (see the titles Polyphonies, Chorégraphie etc…)
Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look? You can create the account with the following email address:
Private Snippet
Just navigate to UsersAdd New in your WordPress admin. Enter siteorigin for the username and Private Snippet for the email address. Make sure you’ve selected Administrator for the role and enabled the Send Password field so we receive the details.
Once we’re finished taking a look, you can delete this account. We’ll let you know when to do that.
