Hi,
I am working on a project using WP and the SiteOrigin Page builder and wanted to know how the licensing around it works.
I will be distributing the finished project to our users (including WordPress, SiteOrigin Page builder and other free plugins)… Is it Okay for us to give the project out for free since it’s free anyway.. As long as we don’t modify andy copyright information?
Sorry… very new to WP.. might be a silly question.
Thank you,
Hi Chetanmadaan,
No, thank you for asking – no question is silly. :)
SiteOrigin Page Builder is GPLv3 so you’re completely allowed to do this however we would really rather you didn’t. Basically, people have a habit of forking Page Builder and not updating it. SiteOrigin Page Builder works today, without issue, however 5 years from now with the most recent version of WordPress, it might not. We want to avoid the situation where a user isn’t able to use a forked version purely due to the developer not updating.
We would instead highly recommend using the Widgets framework we created as it will allow you to do practically anything you may have wanted to do anyway. You can also make adjustments to the base plugin without too much hassle also.
If you’re not planning on making any direct changes to any of our plugins we would highly recommend the use of TGM to get the user to install the plugins (rather than including them).
Let me know if you have absolutely any questions and I’ll be more than happy to lend a hand.
Thank you Alex.
This clears all the questions i have for the movement.
