Site Origin Widgets – multiple sow headline ‘404 Not Found’?

7 years ago · Last reply by Alex S 7 years ago

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced this before?

I’m running the Sydney theme on a client’s website and in the last couple of days I’m suddenly seeing a huge amount of ‘404 Not Found’ traffic relating to the SiteOrigin widgets plugin; specifically in relation to the Headline?

Examples:

https://www.client-website.com/wp-content/uploads/siteorigin-widgets/sow-headline-default-8353fac83df6.css?ver=4.9.8
https://www.client-website.com/wp-content/uploads/siteorigin-widgets/sow-headline-default-c0a95d5a1d3d.css?ver=4.9.8
https://www.client-website.com/wp-content/uploads/siteorigin-widgets/sow-button-wire-cfc5ab7d82f2.css?ver=4.9.8
https://www.client-website.com/wp-content/uploads/siteorigin-widgets/sow-image-default-bd5cd9da0588.css?ver=4.9.8

And so on…

I understand the ver=4.9.8 relates to the WordPress install version.

Neither myself or the client have made any changes to the website itself, in recent weeks, save for the occasional plugin update.

For info, I am seeing the above in Wordfence (latest version).

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Cheers,

Gaz

Actually, I’ve just noticed/realised that it is affecting multiple site origin widgets! See above (button, image and headline).

Anyway, hope someone is able to shed some light as to why these are appearing. :o)

    Hi GazJuanGaz,

This typically happens when you have a caching system installed and a change is made and for whatever reason, the cache hasn’t been regenerated. Do you have a caching plugin? If so, what plugin are you using? Does clearing it help?

    Hey Alex,

Thanks for the reply – very much appreciated.

I do indeed use a cache plugin – Hummingbird – and have previously cleared the site cache on many occasions, e.g. after page/plugin updates; despite this, the above-mentioned 404 traffic still appeared.

However, (strangely) since posting the above four days ago, no further similar traffic has been forthcoming! This might just be down to the bot which triggered it not having crawled since?

Shall keep an eye on it and if I see anything else which may help I’ll be sure to add.

    Thanks once again.

    Me again!

Unfortunately, this problem has reared its ugly head once more and is now affecting genuine users to the site (including myself, when logged in as an Admin!) and not just bots.

I’m using Wordfence security and what is happening is Users are being blocked from the affected site, thus:

‘Exceeded the maximum number of page not found errors per minute for humans’.

As stated previously, all site cache has definitely been cleared on numerous occasions (the site is over three years old and this issue only appeared in the last month or so), so I’m curious as to why the widgets are classing themselves as a URL and, when not found, the user is being told the page the widget is on is non-existent?

    And on and on.

Hopefully someone can help as my client has had several people contact them to advise they are having trouble viewing their site.

    Cheers,

    Hi Gaz,

Can you please link me to a specific page where this issue is occurring on?

Also, would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look at your general settings?
