Site content lost when clicking Page Builder tab on Classic Editor

Hello! I have been updating a website that was created with Page Builder around late 2019 and early 2020. I was not the admin for the page and the original admin had not been updating WordPress itself or any of the plugins so I updated them after downloading an old Duplicator file of the website to my computer as a backup.

Now when I go to the website, it’s empty with the exception of navigation menu (which was not created with SiteOrigin). When I go to check a page, the Classic Editor is automatically in the Text tab and all of the page’s content is in code. If I click the Page Builder tab I get the “Would you like to copy this editor’s existing content to Page Builder?” notification and when I click OK, I get one single SiteOrigin Editor row that is totally empty. Here are images of this: https://imgur.com/a/2aMSstH

I can see the original content in the code in Text tab but it doesn’t migrate to Page Builder anymore. Is there any way to fix this or is the site lost and needs to be rebuilt from scratch? Thank you in advance!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi, thanks for reaching out.

The content in your first screenshot was created in the Block Editor. The Classic Editor plugin can be configured to open pages in both the Classic and Block Editors as required. If you’d like to migrate the page to the Classic Editor Page Builder tab you can do so as follows:

    * Open the page in the Block Editor.
    * Open the SiteOrigin Layout Block.
    * Export the Layout Block content from LayoutsImport/ExportDownload Layout.
    * Open the page in the Classic Editor. Delete the content and switch to the Page Builder tab.
    * Import the JSON file from LayoutsImport/ExportImport Layout.

Please, let us know how you get on.

Hello, and thank you for answering!

Unfortunately, I’m not able to access any of the pages with Block Editor. If I try to open a page without Classic Editor plugin activated, I get a critical error message from WordPress. The only way for me to open the pages without this critical error message is with Classic Editor but then all of the content is in Text tab in code that doesn’t copy in to the Page Builder tab.

I do remember that this site was built using Classic Editor so I’m not sure why the code content now looks like it was built with Block Editor.

Are there any other ways to figure this out? Thank you!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi

You can enable PHP debugging and error logging to find out what the error is. Here is how https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-set-up-wordpress-error-logs-in-wp-config/. Find out what the fatal error is and then troubleshooting it is the way forward.

I can’t say how the other pages of the site were built but the first screenshot in your link above shows Block Editor markup, wp-block-group for example.

    Hi!

I managed to get in to Block Editor after deactivating Slider Images plugin that is unrelated to SiteOrigin, it used to work with SiteOrigin but not anymore after updating. And now, all of the content is there, although some of the HTML code inside SiteOrigin Editor widgets have turned into unicode, but that is easy to fix and probably happened after I was trying play with both Classic Editor and Block Editor.

All of the content is safe now and the website can be updated again! Thank you for the help!
