Show latest post on home page?

I am trying to have my latest weekly post prominently displayed on my home page each week.
If I use the recent post widget, it just shows the text.

I need to show image, title, a portion of post and read more.

I don’t appear to have the templates that are referenced in the support section.
And am unable to access as described.

I am using Sydney theme so when I go to Appearance section I just see Sydney set up info.

Have tried several types of plugins but they all appear blank and I get “requires custom” messages.

Appreciate any help you can offer!

    Hi Patricia,

    Please open your home page in the editor and add a Post Loop widget to your page. Set the Template to Content.php and then open the Posts Query. Set the Posts Per Page value to 1 and the Sticky Posts field to Exclude Sticky.

    Your Post Query changes should look like this:

    How does that look?
