Question about responsive images

I’ve been using the Image Widget and the slider widget on my site. Images look sharp on regular displays but somewhat blurry on retina screens (iPads etc.). The widgets don’t seem to use the srcset attribute to serve higher-resolution versions to these devices. Is there a way to make them do this? Haven’t found one. I believe WordPress core supports the functionality.

Thanks for all your great work on these plugins, they’re terrific.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Alden,

We do use srcset so unless your images are displaying full size, there should be a higher quality version of the image.
Do you have a public URL where we can take a look at what’s going on?

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for your help. Here’s a public page where you can see the issue: https://thinkns.com/instrument/ns-design-electric-cello/ <https://thinkns.com/instrument/ns-design-electric-cello/>

The images in question are the ones at the bottom of the page (below “Feature Comparison”). I added those using SiteOrigin’s image widget. I selected the “medium” (300px) size. Do I need to do anything else to serve a higher resolution version? I only see the x300.png size regardless of which browser I use. I’m looking both at a 2.0 DPR using dev tools, and also on my phone/iPad. The originals I uploaded were 900px—plenty of resolution for a high-res version.

(The images at the top of the page are served via a different system that does include a high-res version, but it’s not as user friendly as your plugin…)

    Thank you!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Alden,

To clarify, are you using the latest version of WordPress?
Also, can you please temporarily set one of the images to Full Sized so I can inspect the resulting output?

    Hi Alex,

We’re using the latest version of WordPress. Here is a private page <https://thinkns.com/image-widget-test/> with an image in the widget at full size, and the same image below at 300×300. Let me know if I can get you anything else. I don’t see srcset in the output.

Very much appreciate your help with this,

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Alden,

Unfortunately, logged out users are unable to access private pages. Can you please make the linked page public? If you don’t add a link to it to your website none of your users will be aware of its existence.

I’m very sorry, I misspoke—that page is public. Let me know if you have trouble accessing it. Thanks!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Alden,

That’s odd. Neither of those images has the correct markup. Hm. Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look at your setup?

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Alden,

Unfortunately, we haven’t received an email from your website in regards to the created account. This sadly means that we’re unable to set a password to log in. Can you please re-create the account?

  11. 6 years, 8 months ago Alden Robinson

Hey Alex, I just re-created the account. My mail log shows it sent you the message. If this doesn't work, is there a private channel we can use for me to transmit you a password? I can also set up a dev version of the site somewhere else, but that's a bit time consuming as it's got a lot going on…

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Alden,

Unfortunately, we still haven’t received the email. Please note that you’ll receive notification from us when we receive it. Can you please manually set a password and send it the same email? That will privately post it in this thread (only staff will be able to see it).

    Hi Alex,

I went ahead and sent it.

However, I did some more digging and ran a few tests, and I think I have isolated this issue to a problem with our theme. Switching to the default theme on a development site enables me to see the srcset markup.

I checked with the developer of the theme framework, and it seems that their support for responsive images was added to a later version than the one I developed this theme from. So, I will start by updating my framework and see if it integrates this functionality. If I have any issues after I do that, I will open a new thread with you. Sorry for bothering you with this question, but you were very helpful in confirming to me that something was screwy with my setup.

Once again, I really appreciate your assistance—you guys provide exceptional support for a free plugin!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Alden,

    Sorry for the delay.

Ah. That makes a lot of sense and would definitely explain why this is happening. I would recommend building using a child theme for future websites to make updates much easier.
