Problem with site displaying on iPhones

7 years ago · Last reply by NYES Digital 7 years ago

Hi

We have a site which has mostly been made with page builder. It all works fine apart from the functionality of it using iphones. On these devices when trying to navigate the page randomly jumps to a different area much further down. It doesn’t do this on desktops and android phones, can you suggest any reasons why this is happening please as it is a big issue for its users?

The url of the site is: superfastnorthyorkshire.com

Thanks

    Hi,

Hm. I suspect this is related to the sticky menu. Please install the Page scroll to id and navigate to WP AdminSettingsPage scroll to id.

Tick Enable on WordPress Menu Links and set the Offset to .header-top. How does that look?

    Hi Alex,

Thank you for this, unfortunately this has not fixed the issue with the way it works on iPhones. As soon as the page has loaded, the page still jumps around. It does this durng scrolling too (there does not seem to be a pattern in what location of the page you get jumped to). Is there anything else you can suggest?

    Many thanks

    Hi,

Hm. Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you’re stating. Are you stating that after page load, the browser view will change to a seemingly random place? Or are you stating that if you click one of the menu items that it scrolls/jumps to the wrong spot?

I ask as the latter is happening for me but it appears as though Page scroll to id hasn’t helped with that. Hm. Please navigate to WP AdminSettingPage scroll to id and set the selector to a[href*=#]:not([href=#]). Does that help?

    Hi Alex,

The problem is essentially that if you load the site on an iPhone and start browsing like a normal user, the site will jump you to a random spot on the page, this happens regardless of whether you are scrolling, or whether you have the page in one place, reading a block of text. The site can jump you up or down, regardless of whether you have clicked on a menu item or not. This only happens on iPhones, but on any browser (i.e. not just Safari, we installed Chrome and it happened).

With the changes you sent, the page initially loads on an iPhone then skips you down to the bottom of the page (to the contact form) but then if you scroll back up the top, it does not jump the user around anymore. Interestingly I have tried disabling Javascript in Safari and the jumping down issue stopped, and started again when Java was switched back on, do you have any suggestions for how we might get around this?

    Many thanks

    Hi,

Ah. In that case, disregard the instructions provided unless you’re looking to adjust the alignment also.
I suspect this jump is because of the image at the top of the page. Does this jump occur if you temporarily disable that section?

Hi Alex the problem seems to be an issue with a maps plugin on that page which doesn’t seem to be compatible with ios devices.
The fix you suggested does help in that the page is more stable now on ios but on loading goes straight to the bottom of the homepage, is there anything that can force it to stay at the top as this would really help?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Can you please link me to your test page so I can run some tests? I ask as you really should only ever be automatically scrolled to the bottom of the page is if you’re already at the bottom of the page and you refresh. So it’s quite possible something is forcing that if it’s not the case.

Hi, although the map is what’s causing the issue the plugin you suggested stops it jumping around on iOS but as mentioned directs the users to the bottom of the page if there is something in the plugin that can be set to remain at the top it would be a good outcome.

    Site is superfastnorthyorkshire.com

    thanks
