Pretty Permalinks Inop

11 years ago · Last reply by Andrew Misplon 11 years ago

I have had custom urls for my pages for several months. I recently changed a page name and the associated permalink. The link automatically added a “-2” onto the end of the url — http://luxuryautoservice.net/about-us-2. I tried to delete the “-2” to no avail, but it did at least go to the page. Then the next day it started going to a 404 Error page not found. I tried changing the permalink to something else. Did not work. If I set Permalinks to default and then the url goes to the page. This morning I found that all of my pages (except home page) are going to 404 Error pages if using custom permalinks. If using the default setting they all work.

I do not know code. I am a novice at any of this. I was just beginning to see rankings improvement fro SEO efforts and would hate to lose the momentum. So, trying to figure out if I can fix without starting over.

My theme is Vantage Premium 2.3.3 on WP 4.1

    Hi headofrock

The “-2” suffix is usually caused by there being a page or post saved with the same slug. If you can’t see the page or post, check the trash, you might have deleted it.

To restore, change back to Post name as your permalink setting and hit save.

I already checked the trash folder. There are no pages in the trash. There are no other pages with the same name. I only have two posts and neither has the name About Us. Whatever is going on is affecting ALL pages, except the home page, the same way. If it is not on default setting they now all go to 404 Error.

Have you re-saved your Permalinks page? Settings > Permalinks > Save Changes. That re-writes your .htaccess file and resolves many 404 instances.
