I’ve been searching for an attractive, responsive post slider.
For example, the evolve theme has a nice post slider (except for colors).
The SiteOrigin post carousel is nice, but
a) doesn’t seem to show thumbnails, and
b) doesn’t loop automatically.
Is there a way to turn the carousel into a auto slider with images and text?

Your best bet would be to try find a plugin that works for you. I unfortunately don’t have one in mind.
Editing the current carousel is a pretty big job. If you’re interested in going that route, we’d recommend the developers at https://codeable.io.
