I used the “Poster Image” on the Video Widget so that a image is displayed on Safari etc when loading the webpage.
From a speed performance perspective, the page could load more efficiently if I know exact dimensions.
Performance is slightly slowed down because the image is resized in HTML or CSS. Serving scaled images is slowing the site down.
Could you please clarify the exact and ideal size so that I can avoid this performance issue?
Thanks!
Chris
Hi Chris,
Can you please link me to the page you’re working on? This will allow me to provide you with a suggestion for a resolution. This is required as there isn’t a one size fits all sort of solution for video posters and it depends solely on the size of the video on the page itself.
Thanks Alex – http://www.BeWhatYouWant.Net
It is a responsive website.
Hi Chris,
Your video is being displayed at 711×400 on your page so ideally, your video poster should be that size also. Just note that if the user full screens the video prior to pressing play the poster may not look very good due to the poster being significantly smaller than the resolution most users will be using.
Thanks for the clarification, I have set it to these dimensions.
I appreciate your reply!
I assume this principle applies for all versions of viewing the website? i.e. different desktop resolutions / browsers and also Mobile Responsive?
Hi Chris,
Yes. The provided dimensions apply to resolutions your website will be displayed at as your video will never be bigger than the stated amount (outside of when its set to full screen), it can only be smaller – and it’s okay, from a performance standpoint, if the poster is the same size on mobile.
Please be sure to post another thread if you have any other questions.
Thanks for your clarification !
Maybe on the I next release, the optimal dimensions can be added as a text item within the plugin to remind users on upload.
Appreciate your help! We can close the thread.
Hi Chris,
No problem, I’m happy I could help. :)
Unfortunately, this isn’t possible as the optimal dimensions depend solely on how large your video appears on the page. How large a video is on the page depends on the size of the row (which is dependent on the theme), column size and the video itself. I really wish this was possible but it’s unfortunately not – sorry mate. :(
