More tag not working – What’s the work around?

Thanks for your great tool and support.
After several weeks of site development, I am now at the stage where I need functionality like the “more” tag on pages (not posts).

After reading WP help & other sites (including this one) – I have come to the following conclusions.
1: The more tag does not work with pages created by Page Builder.
2: You guys are aware of the need and it is on your to-do list.
3: More tag functionality is a low priority (for you) so it won’t be fixed before Christmas (Year unspecified)

If my conclusions are correct
Then please let me know of an alternative way to implement “more” functionality.

It’s a high priority for me!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Ken

Thanks for reaching out. Glad to hear you’ve been making progress.

I don’t believe the more tag works on pages in WordPress in general. It’s a core quicktag function that is specifically aimed at post content. We’ve looked at this question several times over the past year or so. Our final conclusion is that this core feature isn’t designed for what some users are requesting on pages with Page Builder.

Here is how the tag is intended to be used: https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

If you send through more info on what you’re setting up and how you’d like it to work, we can try recommend the best way forward.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Guys

I use this plugin which gives almost the same functionality. You just wrap the hidden portion of the text in the shortcodes given and it gives you an accordion effect.

    Hope it helps

    Hi, I Work Here

Ahh save. Nice one Magus. Ken, let us know how that goes for you.

    Hi folks,
Thanks for the suggestions but what I want is to be able to create several small windows on a page each of which is filled with “interesting stuff” that allows the reader to view the rest by clicking on the link.
    Any other ideas?

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Ken

The plugin linked will allow you to do this. It will expand the containing box to show the rest of the text. If you want the more tag to redirect to another page then you would just need to add links to the destination pages at the bottom of your ‘excerpt’.

    Hi Magus,
    Thanks,
I installed WP-Show-Hide and it worked – but only once with the default options.
The instructions and help page are too cryptic for me to grasp so I’m struggling again and I wasted another hour or two doing trial and error experiments – none of which worked – so I’m still in the dark.

What explicit changes must I make to the default values to
    a) use my own text for the link text.
    b) use more than one plugin on one page

    Thanks
    Ken

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Ken

You can change the text link by adding the following to the end of the shortcode

more_text="Show Installer List" less_text="Hide Installer List"

so your shortcode would look like this

    [showhide more_text="--Read More--" less_text="--Less--"]

To use the plugin in multiple places you need to add a type eg:

    [showhide type="a" more_text="--Read More--" less_text="--Less--"]
    your content
    [/showhide]

    [showhide type="b" more_text="--Read More--" less_text="--Less--"]
    your content
    [/showhide]

Let us know how you get on

    Magus,
    All OK now.
    You’re a Star!
    Thanks

Ken and/or Magus, would you please link to a page where this plug-in is used?

  10. 9 years, 4 months ago Ken Evans

    David,
I don’t know of any live sites – just because I don’t go looking for them not because they are not there.
My own site is still in construction but the plugin works well for me.

    What is your concern?

    Hi, I Work Here

    Thanks for the reply Ken.

David we unfortunately don’t have a demo of this plugin live, the developer doesn’t either. Perhaps give it a quick try on a test page using the example shortcode:

[showhide type="pressrelease"]Press Release goes in here.[/showhide]
