Maximum waypoints on Google Maps widget

Hi all at SiteOrigin,

Want to start by saying your page builder and widget bundle are great. Easy to use and covers pretty much most of what I may ever need to do. Never had any problems, but I’ve just run into my first (and hopefully only).

I’ve used your Google Maps widget on a friend’s site. They’re out and about on a road trip of a lifetime and I was wanting to help them set up a map, so friends and family can keep track of their journey. Your widget is super easy and I thought it would be perfect for them to connect after a days travelling and log where they are and where they’ve been.

Here’s a test page I’ve set up for them:
http://roweandrowe.com.au/map/

The problem I’ve run into is that, once I enter over 10 places, they all disappear. No markers, no route line, nothing. I remove one, back to ten and everything works fine again.

Is there a maximum? If there is a max, can it be increased? If there isn’t a max, then what can I/we do to fix this issue? It would be such a shame, as this widget is perfect for just this, except for this one thing.

I really hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Nick,

Thank you for the kind words and your friend has a very interesting site! :)

That’s odd. We don’t set a limit nor (as a result of said limit) is it possible to adjust such a limit. Could you set up a test widget on a different page with a dozen or so markers? I can’t seem to replicate this locally so that would really help us as I’ll be able to gather debug information.

    Also, you could try a plugin conflict test. For reference;

Can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? You’ll need to clear all your caches after disabling your plugins.

If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.

Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.

If you aren’t using a SiteOrigin theme, then you can also try temporarily switching to one of the default WordPress themes to see if the issue is theme related.

    Hi Alex S,

Thank you for your extensive reply.

I added some more locations to the map until there were more than 10. A start location, a destination and 9 waypoints.

I tried disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins, clearing my cache as I went. I disabled everything except the SiteOrigin Page Builder and SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle. No luck.

I also tried changing the theme to one of WordPress’ default themes (Twenty Sixteen), but still no luck.

The page is public, but not linked to anywhere on the site, as it’s still in the testing stage, so I’ve add the extra locations to this map: http://roweandrowe.com.au/map/

I’ll leave them in there, just so you can check to see what seems to be happening.

Thank you so much for helping me out. It’s a weird one. Best of luck.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Nick,

    :(

So I found out why. Basically, the free version of the API does, in fact, a limit on waypoints (directions), which is 8. The premium version also has a limit but it’s a much larger 23.

I’m going to log this as a request to see if we can work out how to bypass this limit but that sadly won’t be done anytime soon. :( Your only workaround at the moment would be to upgrade to a premium version or remove waypoints and instead rely on markers.

I know this isn’t ideal and I agree. I’m very sorry about this. For more information on the Google Maps directions plan limits please refer to this page.

Damn :( Even 23 doesn’t sound like much. Why would they have a limit?

I guess there’s not much to do about it then.

Thank you again for getting back to me and looking into the issue.

    Great service, great plugins. Thanks.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Nick,

They need these sort of limits to prevent abuse and to entice users to upgrade – which is expensive.

    Sorry mate. :(
