masthead menu on homepage

Hi,
I’m confused. I want to have consistent navigation throughout my site but this line is in the style.css on the child theme
.home .site-header{
display:none;
}
this keeps the menu from displaying doesn’t it? I took it out and still no menu on homepage. I don’t have a decent logo so I don’t care about that but just like to have the primary masthead menu displaying the same way on all pages but want to slice up the homepage with rows and columns.
I’d like to have a full screen with slider but I can’t seem to get the images optimized for this. I bought meta slider and when I save slides to 1280×350 as directed at 72dpi down from 300 the images still look mushy.
Thanks for help–I have to do lots of things here and they all have to be responsive, your theme scheme seems to hold the answer but I can’t seem to get started.
I did a search here on the problems but no one seems to be as clueless as me.
Cheers

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Brian

    Thanks for running Vantage.

    A child theme is only necessary if you plan on editing code in theme files. If you just need to make small CSS changes then the Appearance > Custom CSS interface is the best to use. We have a tutorial on this here:

    https://siteorigin.com/basics/modifying-theme-design-with-custom-css/

    Yes, that line hides the site header on the home page. Try reverting to the parent theme and see if that resolves the issue of the menu not showing on the home page. Also make sure you have Default Menu assigned at Appearance > Theme Settings > Layout > Masthead Menu.

    If this doesn’t answer your question please send through some further info and I’ll dive in further.

    The full screen slider is hard to get right. There is no correct width for the images. The tutorial we have here: https://siteorigin.com/vantage-documentation/slider/ stretches a 1080px wide image to the full screen width. We then advise using a second layer for your text etc. This layer won’t stretch. This setup only works if your background image can stretch and zoom without looking distorted. Some images work for this better than others.

    Going with a fixed width slider is another option here.
