Layout Builder widget in “Latest Posts Homepage widget” area not working

The Layout Builder widget for the “Latest Posts Homepage widget” area of my site is no longer functioning properly. There is a bunch of content and code below the “Open Builder” button, and when I click the “Open Builder” button the layout I had previously constructed is no longer there. It doesn’t appear to be a site-wide Page Builder issue, as the plugin seems to be working properly elsewhere.

Here is a screenshot of the problem:

    Hi Ian,

It looks like there’s invalid data in the layout builder. This is really tricky to fix and I’m not too sure if we’ll be able to. :(

Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look?

    Hi Ian,

Yes, by invalid data I basically mean “corrupted data” although it’s likely not corrupted and more… well, it’s more likely there’s an issue with the contents of it (as in something in that widget is causing the issue).

I was going to try and recover the data but if you would prefer to just recreate it, then by all means.

    Hi Ian,

It’s possible it could be random and it’s possible it’s not. I’m not familiar with the contents of that widget but if there were large amounts of custom JavaScript being added it’s possible that was causing the issue.

Your best bet would be to “save as you go” just in case something goes wrong. By save, I mean export. Open up the layout builder (which you won’t be able to do until you’ve created a new one) and click the layout button in the page builder toolbar. Then click Import / Export in the sidebar and download the layout. That will generate a 1:1 export of the layout and if worse comes to worse and it errors again you’ll be able to revert to a previous version quite easily.

Basically, just be careful as this may happen again. If you’re careful enough, and it happens, you should be able to tell what caused the shortly after it happening.

Great, thanks for the tips Alex. I’ll give it a shot.
