Is there a limit on the number of widgets per page?

By Mario, 2 years ago. Last reply by Andrew Misplon, 2 years ago.

I am trying to build a page with about 20 lines each consisting of a picture, a text element and another text element.
Publishing 10 lines per page is OK. But with the eleventh line I cannot update anymore. The server responds with an error that the service is not available (after about 4 min).
I am wondering if the number of lines per page is limited or that some server parameter is too low.
Thanks in advance if any of you have the answer.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Mario

    Thanks for getting in touch.

You could perhaps contact your hosts, and let them know the details of the issue and ask if they can perhaps check your PHP memory limit and your max execution time values.

PHP memory values are quick to check using https://wordpress.org/plugins/server-ip-memory-usage/.

    Thanks Andrew,
I loaded the plugin. The memory seems OK. Maybe the execution time limit is the bottleneck.

    Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for checking. Is both the WP limit and the regular limit above 40? Sometimes I see the WP limit restricted.

If you could perhaps email your hosts use your question from this thread to ask about max execution time, that would be worthwhile.

    Hi, I Work Here

Hi Mario, a quick check you can try is to add a new page and see if the issue persists with 11 Archives Widget. That might let us know if the issue is widget dependent.

    Beste Andrew,

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Mario

Thanks for the update. On your test page, try adding ten of the core WordPress Archives widgets as follows https://siteorigin.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/archives.jpg. That’ll let you know if the issue is due to adding ten widgets OR if the type of widget added is part of the problem.

    Hoi Andrew,

It looks like there is a restriction an the number of widgets. It depends a bit on the configuration. One widget per line then about 28 lines in a page are possible. If 2 widgets per line then around 13 lines per page are posible and for example 3 widgets per line then only around 12 lines in a page are accepted. Maybe because I am using the free plugin and not the paid one.
It should be a restriction of the Site Origin page builder. Even the server help desk could not find which possible parameter was too small sized.

    Thanks for helping me.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Mario

    Thanks for the feedback.

Page Builder isn’t restricting the number of widgets per page. Adding the SiteOrigin Premium plugin to your site won’t have an impact on this issue.

You can perhaps try setting WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG to true in your WordPress wp-config.php file to see if any PHP errors are being reported.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Mario,

I can confirm there is no restrictions imposed on the number of rows or widgets you can have or the amount of content you can add. There are however server-side restrictions that affect your website. Those sort of restrictions normally trigger an error or notice if they’re met so the instructions Andrew provided to enable error logging is the best way forwards.

    Kind regards,
    Alex

    Alex and Andrew,
Thanks again for helping me to understand the issue (at least what I can check and assuring that it should work).
I have a local wordpress installation on my laptop. Windows NT based installation. It just works fine in any situation.
I have the issue on server based wordpress installations (Linux). I could try on 2 different wordpress installations. Both give the issue that I can’t go beyond around 27 widgets per page. On one installation where I myself can set the debug parameters the publishing command is not finishing (after 25 min I stopped the command). No message in the log file.
The other installation went in a server message (server unavailable) after 5 min but I can’t myself set the debug parameters (have to go to the server helpdesk). Maybe then I can get some information.
    Thanks. Mario van Eck
