I’m almost certain that I should be creating a child theme, and customizing that. That way, when you all release an update, it doesn’t overwrite any of my customization. Is this still recommended?
Hi Lery
It’s still highly recommended, but if all you want to do is make minor tweaks, then using Vantage Premium’s custom CSS editor might be good enough. What sort of customizations are you planning on doing?
Hi Greg. I’m never sure. Most of what I have done so far is straight forward changes. Nothing fancy. I do try out different plug-ins from time to time and I read that is a good reason itself to use child themes? What would be an example when you should use a child theme?
Hi Lery
There is a very clear line on when you need a child theme. If at any point you edit code in any of the theme files contained in the “vantage” theme folder, then you need a child theme. However, if all you need to do is change Custom CSS, you can use Appearance > Custom CSS and a child theme isn’t required.
Hope that helps clear things up a little.
For everything else including posts, pages, theme settings, Customizer settings, core WordPress settings, plugins, plugin content; none of that requires a child theme.
Excellent, thank you very much Andrew. Your answer really helped clear this up.
Super, glad we could help out :)
