I’m trying to set up a homepage with a slider that features my recent posts. I don’t seem to be very good at using the page builder. Can someone advise on the best way to get the slider up and running? and just below that have a list of recent posts with images and excerpts?

Unfortunately, I’m not aware of a plugin that will allow for a slider that pulls recent posts. You might have to find a third-party widget for this.
To create a recent posts list with images and excerpts (this part is dependent on your theme), simply add a recent posts widget to your page. If applicable, adjust the loop template (this part is also dependent on your theme).
Consider using a third party widgets plugin for this. I recommend either the blog widget from the excellent Widgets for SiteOrigin plugin or the Livemesh Grid widget from the also excellent Livemesh SiteOrigin Widgets plugin.
