I would like to have a gallery where once the image is clicked on it opens up not just an enlarge version of the image but a small write up too. Also a place for comments to be left which would then show along side the image.

The closest to this that I’ve used is https://jetpack.com/support/carousel/. There is a demo included in the page linked. Carousel has comments but not the content area you’d like.
