I am thinking to put a small icons within pull down menu – right before what it says as each menu.
Is there any way of doing this without breaking the original theme files?

Each page when edited in the admin has a menu icon drop down menu in the right column. You can use that to add icons to you menu items.
Another solution which will also work for Link items in your menu is to use: https://wordpress.org/plugins/menu-icons/
