I cannot login to admin panel!

10 years ago · Last reply by Andrew Misplon 10 years ago

I need a little help here, I’ve recently become unable to login to the admin control panel for one of my sites. I’ve not made any theme updates or added any new plugins nor did I make any changes to the setting for automatic updates. A little over a week ago as I attempted to login I found myself unable to do so.

The admin panel continuously loops and every time I attempt to reset the pw, as I obtain a new pw and try to login the admin screen still does not accept the new pw and I find myself looped and basically locked out.

I tried disabling through ftp the plugins and this didn’t resolve the issue. Does anyone know whats going on here? What would you suggest to resolve this?

I’m capable just not sure what steps to take here, any help would be welcomed.

Thank you kindly,

    Hi James,

There are a couple of ways to solve this. You can start by trying this:

Edit Users Table by accessing your site’s phpMyAdmin and edit the database carefully.

    1. Open the WordPress database.
    2. Click on the users table in the left menu (default is wp_users, or yourprefix_users if you defined a different table prefix.)
    3. Click BROWSE.
    4. Click on the EDIT button next to the admin user.
    5. Delete whatever is in the password field.
    6. Enter your desired password.
    7. From the Function drop-down list, choose MD5.
    8. Save the info in the database.
    9. Log in to WordPress using “admin” and the password you used.

Try that out and let me know the outcome

    Cheers

    Addo,

I did try this already. The pw was reset but the admin login page continues to redirect. It’s basically stuck in a redirecting loop.

Any other suggestions are surely welcome.

    Thank you kindly,
    James

    Hi James

I’d suggest creating a backup of your site, then logging in with FTP, downloading all the folders in your wp-content/plugins/ folder to your harddrive, then delete all these folders and see if you can login.

If you can, then reupload all your plugins and reactivate them one by one until the issue comes back. This will help you diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.

Thank you for your response Greg, but I tried this too before hand. I renamed the folder, essentially deactivating the plugin folder and still nothing. I went ahead and tried your method to see if this would change anything and nothing.

Not sure what the problem is, I’ve not had a fail like this before. I’m sure others have but I can’t quite seem to find any posts on this issue. I’ve researched several different places and the nearest I can make out is that because I’m offering users to sign up to the site its possible that someone may have corrupted the wp-admin file from failed attempts at user name and pw.

This may explain why the admin page simply loops and redirects when asked for the new pw.

Any other suggestions or fixes would be very much appreciated. I’v e had this issue for nearly two weeks now and cannot login to complete the site.

    Thank you kindly,

    Hi James

Addo and Greg are at different time zones so let me take a third shot in the dark here. Any chance this is file permission related? Please check the response here:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14532520/redirect-loop-on-wp-admin-or-wp-login-php

Alternatively, this thread looks at the url setup being an issue:

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wp-admin-has-a-redirect-loop-after-migrating-to-new-server

Any chance it’s one of those two?

Andew, I tried both of these links and still nothing. I'm not sure what to do with this site or how to recover it. Any other suggestions. This is really a tough one for me, any help is truly appreciated,

Sorry James, I’m not sure what else to suggest here. Have you perhaps chatted to your hosting company, the might be able to look at the redirection that’s happening and offer advice there.
