How to remove spam link

Hello, It looks like someone inserted a spam link (not sure if that’s the right name for it) to my header on a site that I’m building. It appears in the upper right corner right next to where the Header Text appears.

This is the inserted HTML:

<a href="http://anniemortensencom.bluedomino.com/500-loan-online-today/">500 loan online today</a>

I’ve tried to figure out where this got inserted, but can’t. It isn’t in the Header Text box. I looked through the css, php, etc pages that are accessible via the editor and couldn’t find it there either. Any help is appreciated.

Have you checked your widgets? There’s a header widget area, maybe it was put in with the text/HTML widget, which sounds more likely.

    Hi Enrique

Sorry to hear about the hassle.

Head to Appearance > Widgets and delete the Circle Icon widget you have there. That should resolve the problem. You’ll then need to take a look at how this happened. Running a security plugin like Better WP Security or WordFence is an idea. I don’t have any security experience so I’m not quite sure how that text was inserted/injected there.

Thanks for jumping in here Adam.

Hi, That circle icon widget is something I added yesterday while testing something unrelated. I took it off just now. You’ll see the link is still there. And whats funny is that I only see the link on my mobile phone when looking at it through there.

Hello, There’s nothing in the Header Text area but the words “Meeting all your needs”, yet the link still shows up there and I only see it on the mobile version of the site. Where could that be inserted?

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Enrique

Sometimes plugins from untrusted sources can modify files, adding spam links. The first step would be to disable any plugins that you either didn’t buy from a trusted source or download from WordPress.org.

Next, you’ll need to delete Vantage and reinstall it from a fresh zip file. This will eliminate any changes a plugin might have made. You can download a zip file from the original Vantage Premium order email.

Please let us know if that fixes the issue.

Really? I didn’t know that about plugins! Ok. I’ll check that and reinstall Vantage.

    That worked. Thanks!

    Hello Greg,

I reinstalled the theme as you suggested and it appears to work again now…

    thank you, Silvan
