Hi!
I have my own video (not YouTube) that is on the homepage of www.taevo.net. I was trying to edit the CSS class so that I can have the video muted when it first loads. Is there a code I can put in the row or something to make it mutable?
Also, I noticed that the container the video sits in was way below my header/nav menu, so I played around with the .masthead-sentinel class and changed the bottom margin to -150px. However, now when I scroll down, the video goes up into the header area.
Any assistance on clearing up these hiccups is greatly appreciated.
Hi Taevo,
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to mute the video automatically at this time. I’m going to log it as a feature request, but you could also hire a developer to implement this for you. We highly recommend using Codeable.
Regarding the second issue, do you have a public URL where we can take a look at what’s going on? If you need to keep this URL private from other users, just select “Private Reply” on the bottom right of the comment box.
Okay. Thanks for the tip regarding trying to mute the video. When I clicked on the link for Codeable, though, it sent me to a page that did not load.
My public URL is http://www.taevo.net, and if need be, I can create an admin account for you to go into.
Hi Taevo,
Thanks for letting me know – looking into it now.
Okay, so your second issue relates how videos work in the browser. Basically, the black bars (ie. the top and bottom spacing) are caused by the video trying to maintain aspect ratio. This, sadly, is unavoidable for the most part – the plugin you’re using to add the background may have a workaround in place so I would recommend contacting the developers. Just note that it’s really hard to bypass this “feature” so it’s possible they don’t.
Okay, so to make sure I’m understanding properly, the actual issue is the plug in that I’m using to add the background video for the page that is causing that spacing?
Thank you in advance for the clarification…
Hi Taevo,
Not exactly, no. Sorry, I wasn’t very clear about what is causing the actual issue. The spacing is caused because the video is being forced to display the video in such a manner to maintain its aspect ratio. This is not directly a plugin issue and more of an issue of how videos are displayed in HTML5. With that said, the plugin you’re using might have a workaround. I would recommend asking them if they do.
LOL I’m sorry, but I got a little confused on this sentence: The spacing is caused because the video is being forced to display the video in such a manner to maintain its aspect ratio.
Okay, which video is forcing which video in this scenario? LOL Is the smaller video being forced to display that way because it’s trying to maintain the aspect ratio? And you’re saying the plugin that I’m using for the background may have a workaround? I just wanted to be clear that the plug in I’m using for the background is different from the one I’m using for the smaller video. For the smaller video, I was using your SiteOrigin video widget. Should I not use that widget?
Hi Taevo,
The videos are separate and aren’t connected. Both must maintain aspect ratios – this is a “feature” of the HTML5 Videos.
The video background plugin may have a workaround. Please contact them to see if there is one – I’m personally unfamiliar with it so I cannot state if it has one, only that it’s possible it does.
It’s up to you. I see little reason not to use our widget though as the aspect ratio issue will affect videos regardless of how it’s added.
Thank you so much for the clarification. I’ll check with the developers and see if I can find a workaround. I appreciate you explaining it to me.
