Home Page Showing in Text View

Hi,

I can no longer edit the home page for our website. The page builder is gone and it only shows the text view and I can not click on anything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Mae42

This sounds like it could be a plugin conflict issue. Can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? You’ll need to clear all your caches after disabling your plugins.

If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.

Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.

If you aren’t using a SiteOrigin theme, then you can also try temporarily switching to one of the default WordPress themes to see if the issue is theme related.

    Hi Andrew

Thank you so much for your quick response! I unfortneley tried all of the following you mentioned above already. Would I be able to give you access to the admin area so you can take a look for yourself?

Thank you. I appreciate all your help.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Sure :)

Logging in right away is something we can offer on our premium level of support, unfortunately with free it’s more of a last resort.

To confirm, the issue persists with all non-SiteOrigin plugins disabled and a default theme like Twenty Seventeen activated?

    Hi Andrew

The default twenty seventeen theme is activated. The weird thing is this is only happening on the homepage. The page builder works on all other pages expect for home. It just shows the text with a bunch of code and page builder is gone. I can’t even click on anything else. It’s like the page is frozen.

There are no plugins on our site expect for siteorigin plug-ins. I tired deactivating and reactivating and I also cleared my cache. It’s very frustrating. I can’t figure it out :-/

    Thank you for your help

Are the JavaScript errors in the console when editing the home page in WordPress?

    Hi, I Work Here

Please, can you take a look at the link I posted above. It runs through how to open the developer console and check for JS errors. If there are errors present, please send them so we can take a look.

    Hi, I Work Here

(As a side note, if the page was saved with Page Builder content dumped into the Text tab then you might need to consider asking your hosts to run a backup for you. Most take a daily backup and keep 7 days worth. Let’s try find the cause first though.)

    Hi, I Work Here

    Thanks, nothing there.

If you create a new test page, click on Page Builder and then click LayoutsImport/Export, will it let you import the home page? If so, try it, is it editable?

Oh my God, it worked!!! I didn’t even think to do that! Such a simple a click was all I had to do! Thank you Andrew!!! I appreciate all you help!

    Hi, I Work Here

Glad that helped. So now you could consider deleting the broken home page, going to SettingsReading and assigning a new home page.

As to what happened, I’m not sure yet, sorry.

You can try installing: https://wordpress.org/plugins/server-ip-memory-usage/. Check the footer in the admin. Is your WP Memory Limit quite low, like 40mb? If so, you could increase by asking your hosts for a little help.

It’s very strange. It’s like that page is totally frozen too. I can not click on anything at all. I’ll just assign this new one as the homepage. I’ll check out that plugin you mentioned above as well.

Thank you again for all you help! It is greatly appreciated!

    Hi, I Work Here

Please, install the plugin I linked above, check the footer in the WP admin. What is the WP Limit set to?

  15. 6 years, 4 months ago Mae42

It’s not showing anything? Strange. I installed the plugin but I do not see the WP Limit?

    Hi, I Work Here

When you’re logged into WordPress, check the very bottom of the page, it’ll print your IP address, your PHP version, the limits etc. Let me know what the WP Limit is and the PHP version being used pls. Next to Thank you for creating with WordPress, it’ll print something like:

    Memory: 4.25 of 128 MB (3%) | WP LIMIT: 40 MB | IP ::1 (Andrews-MacBook-Pro.local) | PHP 7.2.1 @64BitOS`

My WP Limit is 40MB and PHP version being used is 5.6.33

    Hi, I Work Here

    Thanks. Please try changing both.

    1. Contact your hosts, ask if you can be upgraded to PHP 7 or 7.2. Sometimes this can be done from the hosting control panel. Example. To do this yourself, Google your host name + change PHP version.

    If the above doesn’t help:

    2. Up the WordPress memory limit to 256m.

You’ll need to use a FTP program or hosting file manager to download the wp-config.php file from your root directory and insert this line near the bottom:

    define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );

    Full instructions:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP
    http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/fix-wordpress-memory-exhausted-error-increase-php-memory/

This is something your hosts can assist with.
