Hero image can no longer be editted if shortcode button is inserted

Hi,

I noticed if I try to use a prebuild layout, that if I try to edit/open it it just keeps on turning and can’t be edited.
However if I reproduce that same prebuild layout all goes well, until I insert a button shortcode.

That might explain why even in the prebuild layouts, other elements can be edited, just not the ones where a button shortcode is used.

I tried deactivating all plugins and switched to the vantage theme, but this issues persists.
All themes and plugins are up to date.
Is this a known bug with the button shortcode and what can be done to fix this please?

Thanks,
Annie

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Annie,

This is not a known issue.

Do you currently have Wordfence installed?

    If you do:
This is a WordFence issue. The issue is that it’s initially very strict so things like the Learning Mode do definitely help in resolving issues like this one. However, if you want to “skip” the learning process and just use your widgets you can do so pretty easily. Go to the affected widget and open it up, don’t get “blocked” yet. Instead open up another tab on WP AdminWordFenceLive Traffic and filter it by blocked traffic. Then make an adjustment to your button widget and you’ll get blocked. Go back to the Wordfence tab and press the whitelist param from FireWall button. This is 100% safe as the contents of the field are not at all close to what would be required for an XSS attack. (it’s really quite odd it would even suggest such a thing…).

Let me know if this helps.

    If you don’t:
This is very likely a plugin conflict. Could you please try a plugin conflict test? Can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? You’ll need to clear all your caches after disabling your plugins.

If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.

Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

However, as I mentioned before, I read that topic before even posting here and deavtivated all other plugins, switched to the vantage theme, even de-installed wordfence and its tables, refreshed cache and it still happens ( only as soon as I use a button shortcode). or a predifined one with that shortcode in it.

    Thanks,
    Annie

    Hi Alex,

Just letting you know I am testing this more and found a very strange thing.

I have many websites and one of them has also pagebuilder and there this does simply not happen!
I can just insert a shortcode [buttons]and can still edit the element afterwards.
Suprisingly that website even has a fullblown active Wordfence with active firewall and no issues there.

It uses the Woothemes Canvas, so I wondered if the theme might have something to do with it.
However if I switch from the Woothemes Storefront, to Canvas in the troubled websites, and even deactivate ALL plugins except the Siteroring pagebuilder, this still happens, so no clue what may cause this.

I also tried switching to the twenty sixteen and Siterorigings own Vantage theme, but to no avail.

Any idea’s why this issue is there?

    Thanks,
    Annie

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi LogoLogics,

Hm. The only thing I can think of is you’re using a different version of SiteOrigin Page Builder. What theme are you running on the affected site? I know you’ve tested for this but certain themes come bundled with a fork (a version of SiteOrigin Page Builder not actively maintained by us but instead is maintained by the theme developer) of SiteOrigin Page Builder.

  5. 8 years, 4 months ago LogoLogics

    Hi Alex,

Nope, none of the themes has a build in SiteOrigin pagebuilder.
As I mentioned in my previous post, this is happening with these themes ( I tested so far ) and all other plugins deactivated:

    Woothemes storefront
Woothemes Canvas ( although in one site with Canvas it is not happening)
    Twenty sixteen
    SiteOrigin Vantage

All is up to date as well.

    Strange right?

    Thanks,
    Annie

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi LogoLogics,

Just had to triple check. :(

Very. Could you please send me the contents of your console when this issue happens? Please follow this guide on how to access your browser console.

  7. 8 years, 4 months ago LogoLogics

    Hi Alex,

Here is a screenshot of the console
    http://logologics.nl/store2/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/console.png

Further more I even tested this on a complete clean wordpress installation with nothing else but Pagebuilder and its widgets bundle and this still happens.

I suppose you dont encounter this yourself if you test it=
It only happens if the shortcode buttons is added and therefore the prebuild layouts are not easy to use, the hero image needs to be removed and remade without that shortcode in it to make it work…

    Thanks,
    Annie

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi LogoLogics,

I’m not able too – no. :( This is not a common issue which is why it’s so weird a clean install was able to cause you issues. Hm. Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look? I know it’s a clean install but I might be able to gather something from it. :(

    Hi, I Work Here

Preface: This situation is very rare – infact this is the second time I’ve ever seen it. The first wasn’t resolved due to the user going dark. It’s very likely that your issue (as in if you’re not LogoLogics) will be resolved by following the steps previously outlined in this thread.

    Hi LogoLogics,

Based on a few tests I’ve run – your server is blocking the buttons. I’m not too sure why so I’m sadly unable to provide you with a solution. :(

Could you please ask your hosting provider to run some tests to see why it may be getting blocked? They might even have a log that they can reference. This will help us resolve this issue as right now all we know is something is blocking it. A vendor name or anything that will tell us more will greatly help us with resolving this issue for not only you but for other users.

    Hi Alex,

Yes, that was about the only thing left ( hosting ),very strange.
I am on this hosting for 6 years and can use other shortcode for buttons etc without issues.

I will contact my hosting provider and see if they can do something about it.
The only work around I have is deleting the first hero image and re-creating a new one without your shortcode and use another button shortcode, but ofcourse that kind a takes out the “fun part” of the predefined layouts:-)

Anyhow, thanks for your time, I will get back to you as soon as my host comes up with some answer!

    Hi Alex,

My host investigated and seems that my Wordfence install ( especially the Falcon engine ) on my main domain logologics.nl, causes this conflict with the shortcode in my subfolder!!

I would never have quessed that this would impact a subfolder but it does, deactivating the falcon engine on the main domain, makes the issue go away in the subfolder ( builder in this case).

However I can have Wordfence and its firewall active in this case, and it does not affect the shorcode button.
As soon as I activate the falcon engine, I have the issue again in the subfolder, even though wordfence or falcon engine are not even installed in that wordpress site…

Seems the solution of ” not getting blocked ” will not help here? I mean no issue with wordfence itself this time, only the falcon engine?

However I would not like to get rid of falcon engine, it really speeds up the sites tremendesly.

    Any way to fix this?

    Thanks,
    Annie

Hmmmmmmmmmmm……….. now I am graduately activating and it still works with falcon engine on and even the firewall…
even if I try to edit the hero image, no problem and it does not seem to get blocked.

    Totally confused now haha??

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi LogoLogics,

Hm. I know this might sound weird but please humour me; could you follow the steps outlined in my initial reply on your main website to see if it resolves the issue? You’ll have to get blocked on the main website obviously so you may need to quickly install SiteOrigin Page Builder, load up a layout with a hero widget button, get blocked, whitelist it and repeat until you’re able to use it without issue. Then disable SiteOrigin Page Builder and try on your sub site.

I just want to be extra sure before we rule that method out.

    Hi Alex,

Maybe you misread my previous message, but i is all working now, even with WordFence, Falcon engine and the Firewall active. DUH!! Seems deactivating Wordfence once on the main domain logologics.nl, solved the issue on the sub/testfolder logologics/builder. Dont ask me how and why, it just works now so, thats good news, just leaves me totally confused haha.

However I tested it in another subfolder and there if I try to add a prebuild layout with button, I get this message:

    Background Request Blocked
A background request to WordPress was just blocked for the URL http://logologics.nl/monique/w…ax.php?_panelsnonce=c10c9f1941. If this occurred as a result of an intentional action, you may consider whitelisting the request to allow it in the future.

I click on whitelist this request but after that, it keeps on spinning and spinning so …………….its getting weirder every day haha.

I then disabled only the Wordfence Firewall feature in that particular subfolder, and law and behold, it works.

Seems we can narrow it down to the Wordfence firewall, somehow.
Still dont understand why the clean wordpress test folder with no wordfence what so ever, was influenced by the main installation, and what the “whitelist message” is all about, if I click on it to whitelist, it still does not work.

Only if I disable the local wordfence firewall…

The tip above, I did not try it yet to be honest, I deactivate wordfence regularely to clear the massive database logs from piling up. That would mean I would need to do that over and over again..

    Thanks,
    Annie

  17. 8 years, 3 months ago LogoLogics

By the way, the steps to follow I can not do that?
I mean this is not a “widget” but a button shortcode that is already inaccesible before I can even open it so..

In the live trafect I can see this being blocked:

    Private Snippet

I then withlisted that in the live trafic and after that indeed, the issue is gone with the shortcode button even if I have the firewall on ( non learning mode)

I quess this is solved, thanks for your time, much appreciated Alex!!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi LogoLogics,

By widget, I mean the hero widget as a whole. You were experiencing issues when the widget was loading due to getting blocked.

Glad you worked it out – this was definitely a weird one. I did misread it and thought it was still an issue. :S Please note that I’ve adjusted your last reply to remove reference to you.

  19. 8 years, 3 months ago LogoLogics

    Hi Alex,

Oh, you mean the Hero widget, well thing is, the Hero widget itself does not get blocked.
The only issue was if and only if the button shortcode was inserted in that Hero widget.

Hero widgets ( also the prebuild ones ) that did not have that button shortcode in it, never got blocked)!
Lets keep it at “weird ” haha.

I know how to deal with this now so again, thanks a lot for your patience and help!
