Ugh. I just did the latest update today and the plugin won’t activate. I did a rollback to the previous version and that won’t activate now either.

Most of my homepage is now gone because it isn’t active. What is going on?

Everything I have is up to date and I’ve never had any problems with anything.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi MJ,

I’m really sorry that you’re experiencing issues after a recent update! Do you receive any error messages or see a blank page? If you’re receiving an error message, please provide me with a copy of the error message. If you’re seeing a blank page, please enable WP_DEBUG – this can be done by editing your wp-config.php file. You’ll now be able to see a PHP error message on the previously blank page so please try using our plugins again and send me the newly visible error message.

Hi! Thanks for getting back so quickly!

So, I did a little investigating already and tried to activate from different pages but no luck. Then I kinda stumbled onto the plugin “Widgets for SiteOrigin” and saw that it, too, was inactive. And it now says that it’s not compatible with WP 5.1. I tried to activate it, too, but no luck there either. I wasn’t sure which widgets I’m using were from that plugin or “SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle” — these names are all very confusing! — but I went ahead and disabled the “Widgets for SiteOrigin” plugin. Then I tried to activate “SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle” — and it WORKED! :)

So it looks like that older/outdated plugin was interfering with the current, newly updated plugin. Strange, though, as I don’t remember seeing a note about that other one being incompatible with WP 5.1 until today, after the fact. I check my plugins pretty often for updates and issues and I never saw that “has not been tested” notice.

So, anyway, if anyone else has this issue check the “Widgets for SiteOrigin” and get rid of it — at least until there’s an update. I will just have to replace the two widgets I used from there with something else. Not a huge problem.

But to answer YOUR questions, I did not see any errors ON the page. Just kept clicking the button — and the message at the top would say “plugin activated” but the link next to the plugin would still say “activate.” But, funny enough, on the “add new plugin” search page it would say that it WAS already activated. Weird. My webpages all loaded but anywhere there was a widget it was just blank, of course. Didn’t have a chance to do any debugging. Sorry. ;)

Hope I explained that all well. :)

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi MJ,

That’s strange. Are you able to activate Widgets for SiteOrigin if you reinstall it? I ask as I can’t seem to replicate the activation issue you’re facing locally. I would reach out to the developers of Widget for SiteOrigin to see if they have any ideas on what’s going on.

I wasn’t sure which widgets I’m using were from that plugin or “SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle” — these names are all very confusing!

Widgets for SiteOrigin prefixes their widgets with Inked (ie. Inked Blog, Inked Images, etc). All SiteOrigin Widget Bundle widgets are prefixed by SiteOrigin (SiteOrigin Image, SiteOrigin Hero widgets).

So it looks like I was only using the Inked Blog widget a few times so those spots are now blank on my pages. I can’t seem to find anything comparable in the other widget bundle, though. Is there something else there I can use? I don’t want a slider or carousel. Just a preview of some Woo products — photo, title, sentence. That’s it. Or maybe that is now built in to WP with those … blocks? I haven’t used those yet.

I can try to reinstall it if you’d like and see what happens. Is there a newer version now? I’m leery to reinstall the some one as it says it’s not compatible with WP 5.1.

I’ll have to do it in a little while, though. I’m at work … ;)

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi MJ,

You might be able to use the Post Loop widget instead of the Inked Blog widget. I say might because the Post Loop widget requires your theme to provide the templates used by the widget. Unfortunately, the post loop widget also doesn’t include the same level of control.

I haven’t heard of any compatibility issues with Widgets for SiteOrigin and WordPress 5.1. It may not be one of our plugins but we typically hear about any compatibility issues (and sometimes issues in general) pretty quickly so it’s unlikely it’s not compatible with WordPress 5.1. It just hasn’t been labeled as such – I’m not 100% certain, but I think this requires a plugin update.

Yeah, I tried the Post Loop one already and it just put HUGE post blocks, full width, down the page. Not ideal. ;) With the other one I was able to do a 4×2 layout of posts/products. It was very handy.

I’ll try to reinstall Widgets for SiteOrigin and see what happens. Like I said, it WAS working fine until I did the other plugin updates today. I’ll let you know! ;)

    UPDATE! It’s working now! :)

Weird. I reinstalled it, activated it (it let me this time) and all of the old widgets are working AND the SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle widgets are still working. I wonder if it was just a glitchy thing with the order in which things were updated/activated. Or a corrupt file.

I’m just happy I don’t have to redo any of my pages! Whew. Crisis averted. :)

Thanks so much for your help, Alex!
