Gmail address in email field prevents sending – other addresses are fine

Using the SiteOrigin Contact Form widget, with the Premium contact form add-on activated. WP 5.2.4 and all plugins up to date.

If I put an email address ending in @gmail.com into the email field, I get this error on sending:

Error sending email, please try again later.

but with any other email address, the form sends just fine and is received perfectly fine by both Google Apps email accounts and non-Google Apps email accounts…

All the discussions I find here or in other forums, concerns problems receiving email by a Google Apps / Gmail account, but nothing about this.
