Emoji Fails to Save

3 years ago · Last reply by Andrew Misplon 3 years ago

Does the Vantage theme support emojis? I can insert an emoji into the text or title blocks, and it shows up like it is supposed to. The live editor also shows everything perfectly. Then when I click update on the WordPress page, the emojis fail to show up or save.

    Hi Paul

    Thanks for reaching out.

Are you inserting emojis into SiteOrigin Page Builder? If so, please, let us know which widget you’re using and we’ll test locally.

Correct. I am trying to use these in the Features and Accordion widgets. They show up in preview, but they won’t save. I also just tried in a text widget, and that failed. After the last update today, now no edits seem to be saving. If I go back in and open page builder and open on of the widgets, it says there is a previous version. Restoring shows the emoji, but then it does not update and stick.

Thanks, Paul. Which fields in those widgets? Busy recreating the issue.

I’ve created a test page https://demo.siteorigin.com/corp/sandbox/. So far, I can save emojis in the title and content fields. Thanks for taking a look.

Yep, both of those fields you are showing. Maybe the issue has to do with the saving/updating error that seems to be happening instead.

Thanks. You could start by checking for a plugin conflict. Temporarily deactivate all plugins except for Page Builder and the Widgets Bundle. With only Page Builder and the Widgets Bundle activated, does the issue persist?

I just tried again and what seems to be happening is that the screen flashes when I click Update on the page. Updated is grayed out for a moment then goes back to blue like there are unsaved changes. When I reopen the widget, it says:

There is a newer version of this widget’s content available. Restore Dismiss
Clicking Restore will replace the current widget contents. You can revert by refreshing the page before updating.

I just deleted some text, and that seemed to update and save okay.

Thanks for the additional feedback. A plugin conflict test would be a good place to start. The test should only take a minute or two.

Just deactivated all the other plugins and ignored the “your website has a critical error now” warning, and test out pasting an emoji again. No luck. Still that same issue where the page is not saving/updating.

Thanks for the update. Is this happening if you create a new page and test there?

  11. Andrew Misplon Staff 3 years, 5 months ago

Are you using a custom plugin or theme? If you’re calling a function without checking if the plugin is activated, then it might explain why temporarily deactivating plugins causes an error.

I created a new page to test, and it seems to work there. Though the page I need it on is password protected right now. Would that cause the issue?

  13. Andrew Misplon Staff 3 years, 5 months ago

    It shouldn’t.

Does the issue persist on your test page if you click Layouts and clone the original page and then test for the issue?

  14. Paul Cianciolo 3 years, 5 months ago

No, the problem is that the pages are not saving when I click Done.

Thanks for the updates. Please, find four potential options for continuing troubleshooting below.

If you have a bit of a technical background, you check for console errors in red text.
    https://wordpress.org/support/article/using-your-browser-to-diagnose-javascript-errors/#step-3-diagnosis

You can also check for PHP errors by enabling WP_DEBUG.
    https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/

You can also try extending the plugin conflict test as follows:
    – Temporarily switch to a default theme like Twenty Nineteen.
    – Temporarily deactivate all plugins except for the Widgets Bundle and Page Builder.
    – Does the issue persist? Are you able to find a working baseline?

If the issue only persists on the one page you can send us the layout by going to LayoutsImport/ExportDownload Layout in Page Builder. You can upload the JSON file to any online location like WeTranfer.com and share the link with us.

Thanks. I will have to come back to this later this week or next.

Sounds like a plan. Please, let us know how you get on.

    Cheers

    Andrew
