Displaying short code instead of widget

For some reason, certain widgets, specifically “show posts” widgets, aren’t displaying the widget–only the shortcode–in a row.

See https://saintjameslutheran.com/news-and-calendar/

The calendar (just a pasted shortcode) is fine, but even the basic WordPress “Recent Posts” widget gives a shortcode like you see there. Ideas?

    Hi Dale,

To clarify, what is adding the display-posts shortcode? I ask as that’s not a standard WordPress shortcode so you’ll need a plugin that adds that shortcode to be able to use it. I would recommend removing the shortcode from the text widget and adding the full widget below the text widget itself.

That’s just a text one I tried. I actually started out trying the built-in WordPress one. I switched back to that one just so you can see what it’s doing.

    Hi Dale,

    That’s odd!

Would it be possible for you to send me an export for this widget? To do this open up the page with the widget and click layout in the Page Builder toolbar. Then click import/export and then click download. Please upload the export to a 3rd party file hosting site such as teknik.io.

    It won't download:

    Hi Dale,

Damn – sometimes servers block that export. :(
Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look?

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Dale,

Thanks. I was able to copy your layout and test it. I didn’t have any issues.

Can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? You’ll need to clear all your caches after disabling your plugins.

If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.

Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.

    OK, isolated the problem plugin:

All-In-One Event Calendar Extended Views (Which is what I use for the other column on that same page!)

Here’s a video of what’s happening. The other widget works fine until I activate Stream. Note when I hover over the different parts which part it registers with. I’m guessing there’s a problem with tags not getting closed properly, but I’m not a coder.

    Hi Dale,

Does this issue occur if you change that widget to a SiteOrigin Editor widget? (make sure to disable Automatically add Paragraphs)

  13. 8 years, 2 months ago Dale Critchley

It seems to have fixed itself inexplicably. Good for me, but bad for possible future problems or others who experience the same.

To answer your question, only the various “Recent Posts” widgets were having a problem, whether the basic WordPress one or any other.
