Controlling Thumbnails for featured images in Post Loops

9 years ago · Last reply by Alex S 9 years ago

Hi

I’m using Vantage to build a site, but I’m having a problem with the featured images on post loops on the home page. Is it possible to chose how they crop the original image? I’ve tried setting what it crops to in Media Gallery, and using the Simple Image Sizer plug-in, as well as selecting different settings when I insert the image, but it continues to just use the centre of the image. I’m sure I’m missing something obvious! The site is http://cheerso.me.uk, and the post loops are about halfway down the page, if that’s any help.

Thanks for your help
Peter

    Hi Peter,

Preface: These instructions require Simple Image Sizes

Please navigate to WP AdminSettingsMedia and change the cropping settings for the sow-carousel-default image size. Then save and then regenerate the sow-carousel-default size. Once you’ve done that, please clear your browser cache. Let me know if that helps.

    Hi Alex

Thanks for getting back to me. The instructions helped with another similar problem I had, but I’m still unable to control where on the images in post loops it crops. In fact, somehow now all the images in post loops are stretched to fit (despite my having everything set to crop in Media Settings)! I’d like to be able to force the post loop to crop to the Center-Top of any image, but that setting doesn’t seem to work.

    Thanks for your help
    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look?

Hi – have you had the chance to have a look at this? I'm not sure if you received the notification of the admin account. Thanks!

    Hi Peter,

Sorry for the delay – for whatever reason I didn’t. :(

I suspect Jetpack might be interfering. Can you please try temporarily disabling Photon to see if that helps?

If it doesn’t, just to confirm – you’re trying to adjust the carousel images, correct?

    Hi Alex

Thanks. I've disabled Photon and tried regenerating the thumbnails, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Yes, it's the carousel images (in the news, and blogs and articles sections). I just want them to automatically crop to the center top, and it never seems to quite do that!

Sorry – it's the images in the post loops (the news and blogs and articles sections) rather than the slider carousel. Apologies for any confusion

    Hi Peter,

Okay, so the image sizing your using is 250×380. The thumbnails are actually being displayed at 242×162. I would recommend changing the sow-carousel-default size image size to that and then regenerating those images. Once you’ve done that, please clear your cache. This will prevent the images that look squished.

To clarify, you can change how the image is cropped via the cropping drop down. It defaults to the center.

Thanks Alex. I've resized the images, and they're looking a lot better, but they're still cropping at the center. I keep selecting crop 'center top' on the menu and regenerating the thumbnails but it just crops them in the center every time. Any idea where I'm going wrong?

    Hi Peter,

    Sorry for the delay.

I’m not too sure what’s going on there – I can’t seem to get it to change crop based on the selection either with or with the plugin. Hm. Maybe contact WordPress to see what they think? Also, to clarify, I made a mistake – you’re actually using vantage-carousel size as you’re using the Vantage (post loop) Carousel. Maybe try the SiteOrigin Posts Carousel to see if that helps?
